WTF is that? Saw a pair advertised somewhere, SM-100- and I don't understand the 'Military' designation...went to the Infinity website, and they acknowledged the 'Military' designation, but offered no explanation...

I'm sure one of you knows...haven't seen a question yet that you couldn't answer...

BTEW- that guy with the $12 cerwin vegas got pretty bent real fast..yes?

Hmm, interesting. I'll take a stab at this. Back in the '70s (and '80s I think), quite a few manufacturers of audio made models specifically for sale in the various military base exchanges over seas. Most used existing, cheap, mass-market models. Some gave them a new model number. Others, namely Pioneer, just added a suffix to the serial to indicate that the unit was sold at the discounted rate granted to soldiers serving abroad. I believe Mark W. has a pair of HPM-100s marked thus.

When you speak of the SM-100 Military, you must be speaking of the SM-100+, that was a basic SM-100 just marked to indicate sale much as Pioneer did above.

So, the specs, as from the Infinity site (http://www.infinitysystems.com/homeaudio/product_support.aspx), are as follows:

Frequency Response: 59Hz - 22kHz (+/-3dB)
Crossover Frequency(ies): 2.5kHz
Nominal Impedance: 8 ohms
Recommended Power Amplifier Range: 10 -150 watts RMS per channel
Woofer: 10.5" polypropylene coated
Tweeter: 1" polycell "high-output"

And of course, a picture is always nice:

For the military headbanging metalman. Cerwin-Vega did the same thing. Re-numbered some of the stuff sold on the outside, and sold it "exclusively" in the BX. The stuff was all "digital ready" too.

Don't be fooled on the size of that cabinet and woofer. You can rock those cabinets back and forth with your pinky. Infinity made some great loudspeakers. None of them were in the "Studio Monitor (SM)" line.

I bought a new pair of SM-150s back when new. . . They are junk. . . I blew all 4 midranges in about 10 minutes. One brief play at about 50 watts max and then only one midrange and it was scratchy. I opened the box to nothing. . .

I have a pair of Infinity SM-102's that appear to have the same drivers but in a smaller cabinet. The only good thing about them is that they make my Bose 301 II workbench speakers sound terrific. IMO. I hope your SM-100's sound better than these.
