i finally finished up making an excel spreadsheet of my vinyl collection.... the collection grew quickly over the last month and i figured if it got ANY bigger, i wouldnt want to take the time to start from beginning and put everything into the spreadsheet......

so after about 4 hrs of typing and sorting.... its in alphabetically order and finally know what i have! now it will be simple just to add them in as i get more.

anyone do this? or am i just crazy? all i know is that i would NOT want to do this to a collection of more than a few hundred albums! and when i have a few thousand albums i figure ill thank myself

I only wish I was that organized and disciplined! Nice job. :)

Great thing to do. I'm in the process of doing it for my album collection after listing all of my cds. Especially important in case of a fire or theft. The list will help negotiations with your insurance company if you have homeowners (replacement cost) plus assist you in replacing the lost music. Plus its always nice to know what's there.

Just make sure you keep a copy of your files off site <kindof obvious but most people don't>

It would be too big of a project at this stage of the hobby for me. I began collecting vinyl long before I got my first computer. My collection of vinyl is somewhere around 12,000. I do have them alphabetized by genre, which in itself was no small feat.

I use a database called Music Collector (http://www.collectorz.com/) that I like a lot. The initial setup for hundreds of albums was a bitch but now entering new stuff as I get it is a breeze.

I've been meaning to do the same thing. I've downloaded a few of the shareware ones, don't really care too much for them, so I figured Excell would be the way to go, easy to add/edit etc. I'm just too lazy. Since it's already done, you can e-mail me the format if you want JB. :D

thats exactly why i wanted to start now......im turning 23 this month, so i have many years of collecting ahead of me.....it would be to big of an endeavor to do later

I have all of my records and cds, with the exception of the most recent, in an excel spreadsheet as well. I did it for 2 reasons: The spines on a lot of records are hard to read and I would miss out on listening to some if I just stood there staring at them looking for something to spin. Insurance companines (from what I have heard) won't reimburse you for cd's or records unless you can detail to them every single title that was destroyed, stolen, or otherwise lost.
