Listening to Open House/House Party right now featuring Smith on Hammond B3 organ, Jackie McLean on alto, Ike Quebec on tenor, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Quentin Warren on guitar, and Donald Baily on drums. Great jazz, hot solos. I have 8 Smith recordings in my jazz collection - just about all of them outstanding. Was wondering if anyone else digs the incredible Jimmy Smith.

I have a number of Jimmy Smith cd's and while I like them he doesn't knock me out. What are his best recordings? BTW I saw Blue Mitchell around 1972 playing with John Mayall. Great concert.

I love Jimmy Smith and have quite a few albums in my collection. I like the sound of a Hammond B3 and I know it's not for everyone but Jimmy single handedly pioneered the instrument into jazz. Nobody did it better than him. If you notice, you'll never see a bass player in his sessions (it does happen but it's very rare). Jimmy plays the bass lines with the foot pedals. Very talented musician and he wrote some great jazz music.

I used to know her a little bit back when I lived in Philly. Very nice lady- memory like a bear trap. She could make the Hammand walk right out the door.

IMO Jimmy was the master of the B3, just as much at home in blues as jazz. FWIW, I especially like his work with Wes Montgomery.

Count me in. I've recently posted about The Definitive Jimmy Smith which I just recently acquired. And just this week I rec'd two verve LPs of his Got My Mojo Working, & Further Adventures of Jimmy Smith and Wes Montgomery. These have caused me to want to dig into his other albums.

'Root Down' from ca. '72 is my fave, it's a live recording and maybe the funkiest of them all (not just the usual set of the groovy/bluesy soul-jazz tunes) - 'Dynamic Duo' w/ Wes Montgomery is also a classic.

I was just at the record shop and looked over a used copy of the Dynamic Duo lp with Wes Montgomery. I passed on it this morning, but based on this thread I may swing back and grab it this weekend.

Really enjoy Jimmy Smith, got turned on to him through his work with Wes Montgomery.
A really good disc to try is Prayer Meetin', with Stanley Turrentine. Also picked up Dot Com Blues, and it grows on ya, good stuff.

Was from Norristown, PA, just north of Philadelphia. Passed away last fall. Our local jazz station did a tribute which featured several interviews he had with various of the DJs over the years. Great work on those whirling horns. :thmbsp:

I've today recorded two LPs to my HDD and to CD: Got My Mojo Workin', & Further Adventures of Jimmy Smith & Wes Montgomery. No one plays an organ better, except maybe for Billy Preston.

I'm just now getting into jazz - I picked up his self titled LP on Blue Note last weekend for a dollar. I'd say it was a wise investment...very mellow & soulful. :thmbsp:

Jimmy Smith was doing things with the changes in 1955 that Coltrane hadn't really firgured out until 3-4 years later. Jimmy Smith was a MONSTER!!

I have all of the original Blue Notes, all of the Verves and most of the others.

I heard him live more than a dozen times.

I've just started within the past few months, and find his work great! Two CD's (one a collaboration with Joey DeFrancesca, and The Essential Jimmy Smith) and a mono copy of bashin'. Being a fan of organ, his stuff is right up my alley.
