View Full Version : 64/128/256 mb sdram pc66/100 wanted
markthefixer 02-24-2006, 10:07 PM I'm upgrading my (old and only) PII system with 96 mb because lately I've been noticing it's doing a lot of "disk swapping" thus it needs more ram. It is running at pc 66 speeds now, and I don't think it can go faster.
Anybody got any old memory laying around (pc 66 or pc 100 sdram (or edo) 168 pin dimm) at 64 mb or higher, just doing nothing?
Thanks!!
P.S. I'm not sure what my motherboard will be happy with, it would be nice to try 128's and 256's and see if they are recognized and work. I buy anything I break, breakage determined by you...
decius 02-24-2006, 10:10 PM Ugh dude, I had 4 PIII systems in my house for the longest time, with various problems...I finally stripped and went to the local computer shop and traded them in. I had a few 256MB sticks and a few 128MB sticks...ugh. Let me look around my back room though, I have a mini-computer store growing.
Redcatcher199th 03-08-2006, 01:13 AM :scratch2: Hello what make is the motherboard ? system information would tell you everything if your running windows 2000 or look at the motherboard find numbers or tags if its compuke no offence just a nic
I would donate cpu, ram, motherboard and a hard drive your case is AT??
or ATX case I guessing AT I have a PIII 933/256/133/1.7V
english its a 933 Mhz processor 256 on chip cache or memory
133 mhz front side bus speed and 1.7V core solet me know I am sure
between a few members we can get ya up to speed :smoke:
markthefixer 03-08-2006, 03:05 AM I'm still running windows 98, to try anything newer on a pII is folly. It is an ATX (it has the 20 pin power connector) machine from 1998(?).
Edit: it is a 235 watt power supply (+12v/8A, +5/25A, +3.3/14A, +5vsb/1A, -5v/.5A, -12v/.5A)
I had a companion post, to the wanted ad...
I'm running on a PII at about 400 Mhz. The current ram in my system is a 32 Meg PC66 sdram and a 64 Meg PC66 sdram (SD66 was determined by referencing the chip numbers) giving a total of 96 meg.
A test program also reports that the ram is running at 66 mhz.
It's old and slow, I know...
The computer has a biostar M6TLC motherboard, and supposedly it says it can take (3 x 128?) 384 meg using sdram and (3 x 256?) 768 meg using edo.
It has 3 168 pin DIMM sockets.
------------- quoting ------------------
DRAM Memory
Supports 8/16/32/64..... MB DIMM module socket
Supports EDO(3.3v) & Synchronous DRAM(3.3v)
Supports a maximum memory size of 384 MB with SDRAM or 768 MB with EDO
------------ end EXACT quote -----------
and this if it is a mistake (edo and sdram swap on size) it is in THEIR LITERATURE!!
But it dosent mention any DIMM over 64 Mb. (but it DOES "....").
I've sorta let the internal ram tech stuff pass me by while they sorted it out.
I know edo is REALLY old, and sdram has more or less taken over for it.
And I'm learning, I can get really technical (wait states, cas ras etc), but it almost always comes down to a simple answer, stuff like pc100 pc133 (or worse, the newer, faster more specialized stuff).
I also know that the newer stuff has a chip built in that contains all the tech info that the motherboard and bios need to get along.
My wish is to end up trying out some (correct) DIMMs greater than 64MB to see if this old clunker can use them,(and if I break em, I bought em.... owner determines " broke" status if borrowed or on tryout status.) and of course be guided in my choices by your experiences...
I put in a link to a post, rather than quote it again, if you care to read it:

Redcatcher199th 03-08-2006, 01:10 PM Well as to breaking ram it is very tuff the one thing that will take it out is a electric static discharge
one that you would not even know it has shocked the ram
and there isnt no charge on my end other than shiping and a donation to some site that goes by AK ............I heard that they collect vintage audio equipment
tubes and such ghezz ..........what a wierd concept a pII 400Mhz is pleanty
to run windows but if you hit alt, ctr, del and running proceses are more than 8 running win 98 is a dog
I have some shareware :smoke: ..........can get ya up and running a bio's flash
i am sure it needs one would fix something so lets get you some ram to stuff in her
when installing ram make sure puter is off and I touch the metal part of puter to release and esd then with other hand install ram always put bigest pies closeset to cpu kinda like the pipe theory then so on and so on
then fire it up and if cpu fan is cloged clean it then fire away lol shoot mer you add to send ram :scratch2:
markthefixer 03-08-2006, 03:47 PM pm sent
sorenj07 03-08-2006, 06:49 PM in a couple months i'll be able to unpack some stuff from storage and im pretty sure i have a 128mb sdram 133mhz stick or two lying around, if you need 'em i'll probably only charge for shipping cuz i have _absolutely_ no use for them... idk if this is much help :\
markthefixer 03-08-2006, 08:05 PM Just a few hours ago I began testing the combination of the dimms I was sent and this motherboard.
The brain damaged motherboard I have refuses to recognize the 128 mb pc100 sdram dimms that Kamakiri so generously sent me. They will recognize 32 meg worth of ram in each.Oh well, some things just won't play well with each other. End result of a lot of swapping is a 64k, and both 128's in the system giving only 128 mb total with an arrangement of 64 + 32 + 32 of all things!!!
The hardware info program (hwinfo32) won't recognize them, and tells me I have my old 64 mb in slot (wherever I move it to) and no others but the powerup does report 128mb.
BUT THINGS ** DID ** GET BETTER !!
I can run firefox AND adobe reader with a 65 mb pdf without disk swaps so there IS an improvement!!!
(64 + 32 = 96 TO 128 = 64 + 32(of128) + 32(of 128)).
I have a call request in with esupport.com which is the official award bios upgrade outlet, so we'll see.
EDIT:They called back and want either 50 or 40 dollars for an upgraded bios, claiming to support up to 768 meg.
There's a set of 2 64mb old pc66 sdrams on the way that I hope it will recognize, giving me 3 x 64 = 192 mb.
EDIT: They worked, I'm on 192 mb now...
So let's put this thread on hold a little while, and see how things sort out over the next week as the incoming stuff arrives.
Thanks to everybody !!
markthefixer
EDIT: EDO 128's or older "low density" 128's (16 chips,8 per side) might work.
spaceman 03-28-2006, 06:31 AM Lemme know how it goes, I have some old RAM here, as well as a couple PII's & a PIII processors. I also have an Asus slot 1 mobo, but the COM port has some issue, exclamation point in device manager. Funny, this was the first time I peeked in the non-audio classifieds.
markthefixer 03-28-2006, 03:17 PM Things are kinda static right now. there is 3 x 64m = 192 mb in the system.
Kamakiri sent me a pair of 128 mb sdrams that had 16 chips on them but the bios didnt recognize more than 32 mb each. Perhaps some older chips in a 16 chip 128mb would work... the motherboard .pdf I got says "Supports a maximum memory size of 384 MB with SDRAM or 768 MB with EDO"... so some older chips may work.
BUT 192m allows me to keep ak up and pull up .pdf manuals without disk to memory swaps (usually) slowing things down, making it much better than it had been to troubleshoot stuff online.
Kamakiri has a locked up p3 dell optiplex in transit to me, and I'm breathlessly waiting to get my hands on it.
Redcatcher199th was also going to send me some old stuff etc...
I'm going to look up that asus motherboard, as to what that is all about...
my memory fails me as to what fits into a "slot 1", unforgivable I know (and I probably used to know exactly what it ment) but old age creeps up on us all.
Thanks for the interest....
