Here is one for you RPTV experts. Anyone repair/replaced the tuner section before? I picked up an old LXI (Sears) 53" RPTV really cheap. Problem is the tuner section appears dead. But the video input is working and I get a really good picture with a VCR or DVD. Calling Sears for a repair manual and they say they have to send it to research. So meanwhile, anyone here can tell me who is the original manufacturer? A few parts inside has Phillips logo on it so it might be Phillips.
Sears model #626.54552190
Chassis model # PTV377-AH01
Assembled in Greenville, TN
date 1991
SolderIron,
If you get a nice picture on external video input what more could you want? If I were you I'd count my blessing, and the money I saved and move on. Working on that stuff can drive you crazy, and when you are done it may not work at all. IMHO.
It couldn't be something dumb like the parental lockout engaged can it?

If you have cable TV you could just use a VCR as the tuner (or get a cable box) or if you have satellite (better then digital cable IMO) then you would use that receiver....
....if the TV has s-video input, even better
Good luck

Rob and Night Wolf,
Good point about counting my blessing. I paid only $35 for the RPTV :) . I been working many years in electronic hardware and software. Did this and done that on analog, computer, and digital circuits. TV/rf circuits is one area I don't do except when it it becomes a home project. That is where I like to get help from knowledgable folks. I am pretty good with trouble shooting and repair. Most of the time I have the Mindas touch, but once in awhile I get an attack of reverse Midas!!
Now I am using the TV with a VCR and and DVD. Without a remote control, I have to get infront of the TV and manually select the video source to put on screen. Hate to get my butt of the chair and I like to find a remote for this thing. I can select between the tuner, 2 video inputs, except the tuner shows no picture. Is it hard to find a remte for electronics older than 1995? Most universal remote does not go back to 1991.
There are 3 indicators by the switches: Power On, SAP, STR.
Any idea what is SAP and STR??
I can get to the feature screen and there is indeed a parental feature. Except I need a pass code to do anything. How to get pass this? I don't know if this is why I can't get anything from the tuner. I think there maybe an internal battery to keep a memory energized to store the pass word. Would temporary removing the battery reset the parental lock out?
Looking at the tuner, it is a small tin can. I don't think anybody tries to fix them anymore. When bad they are replaced as a unit. Looking at the schematic of a few VCRs, it appears the TV tuner is pretty much a standard item. Is this true? They seems to have the same input output pin names.
Welcome help/coments everyone.:D
