View Full Version : The Buckinghams
datsunmike 03-02-2006, 12:33 PM I was listening to them over the weekend and forgot how good many of their songs were and how prescient their records were. I guess that had to do with their producer, James William Guercio, who later worked with Chicago.
Anyway, for those of you who have them in their record collection and who you forgot about . . .
Strangeband 03-02-2006, 12:58 PM It's kind of a drag, but, in fact, I had forgotten about the Buckinghams until recently when I ran across the first Farm Dogs CD "Last Stand in Open Country." Dennis Tufano shows up here contributing vocals. He is not in the lineup on the bands follow up CD.
cubdog 03-02-2006, 01:26 PM From the Chcago area. Also the New Colony Six, Cryan Shames, and the Maudes were popular then.
bordeno 03-02-2006, 02:03 PM They were a good listen. My favorite song was "Susan," a little known, beautifully constructed pop confection.
Sandy G 03-02-2006, 02:19 PM You're 100% right there, Bordeno...I wonder what those records would sound like on our systems nowadays, instead of out of a 6X9" OEM speaker in a '67 Mercury wagon on an AM radio...-Sandy G.
Columbia/Legacy has an excellent Buckinghams compilation that covers their USA Records and Columbia Records output called "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy - A Collection" (CK 47718). Highly recommended! Don't forget another Chicago group, The Shadows of Knight who had hits with Van Morrison's "Gloria" and Bo Diddley's "Oh Yeah"! :smoke:
Andyman 03-02-2006, 02:52 PM You guys are bringing back a lot of Top 40 memories from high school. All those Chicago bands got heavy airplay up in Milwaukee.
Most of those songs stayed on the AM radio without hitting the mechanical pushbutton selector. Yeah, those that you tuned in the station, pulled out the button then jammed it in??
The Grass Roots were pretty good too, but I'm not sure where they were from. Ditto Johnny Rivers.
datsunmike 03-02-2006, 05:05 PM And they got good play in NYC where I'm from.
While I hate being so old and having so many physical ailments from youthful indescretions, I did enjoy growing uo when I did and all the great music we had an opportunity to listen to and grow up with - as if men ever grow up :)
nitrous 03-02-2006, 05:30 PM They had a number of good singles. I'm probably one of the few people on the planet who actually owns a copy of the LP entitled "Portraits."(It's somewhere in this mess of a record collection.)
Sandy G 03-02-2006, 06:49 PM The Buckinghams had a classy sound, I thought.
steve gibson 03-02-2006, 07:28 PM "Kind of a Drag". One of my favorite high school tunes! The Midwest's Fabulous Flippers did the Buckingham's music very well.

The Flippers, yeah! Remember the Running Red Dogs? Don't know if you were located in the Fort Dodge area then, but I played with the Cellophane Spectacle (how's that for a 60's name?) and Fort Dodge was a frequent gig. We always opened the 2nd set with "Kind of a Drag" and the 3rd set with "Mercy, mercy, mercy." Road bands worked hard in those days. At least 3 sets (often 4) and you had to move a freakin' B3 with 2 leslies every night.
electronjohn 03-03-2006, 04:26 PM not to pick a nit, but..."They're coming to YOUR town! Direct from the Red Dog Inn in Lawrence, Kansas..The Roaring Red Dogs!!!!!" Savvy promoters back in the day knew where to make their time buys..nights (for a good rate) on 1520 KOMA Oklahoma City and take advantage of that big 50KW night signal that covered 23 states. Of course, The Flippers got plenty of ads (remember their version of "Harlem Shuffle"?), along with The Marvelous Mauraders, Spider and The Crabs, Winston Fink and the Unbelievable Uglies, Canoise...all the great 6 to 9 piece show bands that toiled on the ballroom circuit in the mid to late 60's. Mentioning The Shadows of Knight brings to mind two of my faves by them: "Oh, Yeah" and "Shake". Ah...those were the days. Of course, as we aged a little bit and became more "experienced", we moved down the dial to The Might 1090 KAAY and the inimitable Clyde Clifford and "Beeker Street". That's a whole 'nother story..........
(BTW...Cellophane Spectacle..KOOL NAME!!)
CortR 03-03-2006, 04:35 PM See, the first thing to go is your memory. Of course you're right, and I appreciate the correction.

I think I do remember hearing your band. Those were the greatest times. The Rumbles is another group frequenting Fort Dodge and the midwest. I have recently been in touch with a member of the Flippers. Got an oldie CD, a new release, T-shirt and hat. They still get together and perform. Do a Goggle. Nothing better than a live show band! My brother-in-law's brother, Terry Klein, played with a band which I can't remember the name, but they had a one hit wonder "Peter Rabbitt". His still plays in Okoboji.
Toasted Almond 03-03-2006, 07:22 PM I loved it when somebody put lyrics to Joe Zawinul's "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy".
electronjohn 03-04-2006, 05:09 PM "Peter Rabbit" was done by DeeJay and the Runaways...and I think it was recorded (along with more kool stuff from that era) at IGL (Iowa Great Lakes) studios in Spirit Lake(?). Lake Okoboji!!!!! The Riviera of the Midwest!!! Anybody ever hang out at the Roof Garden?
steve gibson 03-04-2006, 08:10 PM I spent several evenings at the Roof Garden during the summers of '68 and '69. We had live bands to choose from somewhere close every weekend. Those were good times.
datsunmike 03-07-2006, 12:50 PM They had a number of good singles. I'm probably one of the few people on the planet who actually owns a copy of the LP entitled "Portraits."(It's somewhere in this mess of a record collection.)
Nahhhhhhhh, I own Portraits too as well as their others :)

Did the Google--had no idea they were inducted into both Iowa and Minnesota Music Halls of Fame. Remember the Rumbles well. Those Vox Super Beatle amps! Grew up n Le Mars so Arnold's Park and the Roof Garden was an easy drive and the place to be. Thanks for inspiring the memories.
