That looks a LOT like my BX-100, so it may have idler woes.
If it shuts down, search for a thread on Nak idlers, It's a cheap part and a 15 minute fix.

Nice pickup, BTW

Yeah, it also reminds me of my old '84 BX-150 that gave up the ghost back in the '90s due to transport failure. Sounded fantastic with cassettes recorded on my DRAGON (also sold, dammit!). Hope this pro workhorse continues to function properly for you (many of these pro Nakamichis were used for dubbing purposes for prerecorded cassette labels such as InSync Labs, etc.)

Hi,

I've have a chance of buying a Nakamichi MR-2 in good shape. Could anybody give me some advice on this model? I mainly want the deck to listen to pre-recorded cassette tapes of good classical music brands (DG,Decca,RCA, etc).

Many thanks for any inputs.

All the best

Its a good machine which is closely related to the BX-100, and 125. It has only two heads, but has a three motor transport with a belt drive capstan. And the fact is that a two head nak will often out perform other manufacturers three head machines.

These share the idler tire problems with most other naks of this vintage. But these can be easily replaced, and cost less about $7.00.

The biggest downside to the MR series is that since they were designed to be pro versions of the BX units, they often tend to have been used harder than some others.

Grrrrrrr...you guys are constantly finding nice equipment in thrift stores! Are you going to the Beverly Hills thrift shop or something?

All I ever see at these places is junk. Maybe an old Sparkomatic or Audiovox AM car radio or something.

Ditto on finding old junk at my local Goodwill and Salvation Army outlets. I've never yet stumbled across anything worth buying...just old Yorx boomboxes and GE clock radios I wouldn't give a nickel each for...yuck!

Great looking tape deck. Hit the nicks with a fine-point Sharpie! :)

Here is a special gift to AK members who are fixing up MR-2s. I will offer for free, any parts that I can can remove from my stack of these cool decks and stick in a padded envelope. For a limited time.

Spread the Karma.

Yeppers... I changed out the idler tire. The deck is hooked to my computer so I can copy cassettes onto my HD. Deck works like a champ.... I have a pile of Grateful Dead sound board recordings that I am putting on the HD. Got distracted a bit back so am still working toward completing that task:) I owe CD copies to a few folks…. One of these days I will surprise them :) You have not been forgotten... I am just slow….

Also... You try and look your best and see what it gets ya' :)

Omi,
Pop the bottom cover and find the screw that fastens the rear cabinet to the main circuit board ground. Remove the screw and clean it with a file. Reinstall it with a toothed lockwasher. This screw loosens and generates wierd background noises.
