View Full Version : R2R metal take-up reel
ShaneR2R 03-04-2006, 04:58 PM I am listening to my Teac A 2300S and have my Maxell MR-7 metal take up reel on. I got to thinking...... what is the rarest or hardest to find metal take-up reel ? also I have seen a few Maxell take-ups on Ebay like mine and they seem to sell at high prices, does maxell make these reels any longer. I bought mine back in 1990 when I was 16 at a local mall, just walked in there they were on a shelf along side Maxell UD 35-90's, man I would love to walk into a store today and find those. If I would have known then what I do now I would have stocked up on alot more maxell 35-90's. Just bought a few Quantegy 456's, very pleased with the sound, I also have a few Ampex 406's that I am playing, the ones made after 1990, no shedding that I have seen.
Are the 408's pretty close to the same sound as the 406's ?????
Vintage TX 03-04-2006, 07:59 PM Some rare 7 inch metal ones were made by Sony and Akai in different colors, like gold, silver and black.
Also a old Akai silver with stamped out logo from early 60's.
Plain silver Meister can be found pretty cheap.
I have many rare ones will post some pictures one day.
About the Ampex 406, most after 1990 are good tapes.
goldear 03-04-2006, 08:52 PM I've never heard of 408; but 407 is the 1 mil version of the the 406. Perhaps 408 is simply an even thinner version of the same formuation? But that is just a wild guess, as I really have no clue on this one.
Around 1990 is when Quategy changed their binder to eliminate the sheeding issue. So what you say make sense in that regard.
Just stay away from the AMPEX 456, as almost all of that stuff I have encountered more closely resembles adhesive tape than it does recording tape. :thumbsdn: I'm not sure exactly when the name change occured to Quantegy, but I suspect that it might have occured pretty close to the same time, which would imply that most of the Quantegy tapes would be just fine.
And I agree with you. Quantegy 456 & 457 are great sounding tapes. :thmbsp: I'm less fond of the 406 and 407 though.
ShaneR2R 03-04-2006, 09:23 PM the Quantegy 408 can be found at www.tapestockonline.com all the tapes they offer or listed there. the 408 comes in 600' and 1200', the box resembles
the old ampex 406's, same colored box. the 408 is offered only in the .25 by 7" reels. the 600' reels start around $15 and the 1200' around $20. I thought about buying a reel or 2 but wanted to see if anyone had used this tape.
ShaneR2R 03-04-2006, 09:28 PM the URL that will bring up the tapes they offer is
www.tapestockonline.com/reeltoreel.html wants there scroll to the bottom and you will see the Quantegy 408's ...
Andyman 03-04-2006, 10:13 PM I've sold a few metal reels and the one's that seem to bring the highest prices are the spoked Pioneer ones, I think they are PR-101s. The 7" PR-85s bring good money too, and that 7" Maxell will sell for around $30 itself.
Jay Pemberton 03-04-2006, 11:33 PM 408 is a low-print formulation, 1 1/2 mil. Similar to the Scotch 908 of yore, I think. Developed for use with Nagra recorders in the film industry but will work well on many other machines too. Not a bad tape.
hakka26 03-05-2006, 12:01 AM I have a Dokorder reel.
mobydud 03-05-2006, 02:41 AM I have two Realistic metal reels. Even these things sell for pretty good $, considering what they are. Guess I'll keep 'em :)
hakka26 03-05-2006, 02:59 AM My Dokorder and Pioneer are 7's. Revox (red), Memorex and Scotch in 10's.
jblmar 03-05-2006, 03:44 PM I have (2) TEAC RE-711 7" metal reels in perfect condition-with boxes! If anyone's interested, shoot me a PM.

goldear 03-05-2006, 03:48 PM I'd love to get my hands on one of those Sony 7" metal reels. But Epay prices have simply been way too high lately :tears: .
bOUddha 03-06-2006, 09:46 AM jblmar, check your private messages... :scratch2:
Holst 03-06-2006, 12:22 PM I kick myself to think that metal reels were manufactured less than two miles from my house, I knew a few people who worked there, and I never thought to find out what I'd have to do to pick up a crate of them.
forum7 05-13-2008, 12:24 AM Here is my EBAY aquired reel collection. The Dokorder was the hardest reel to
find. The green film is the original protective plastic.
I also have these in their 7 inch version.

Mark W. 05-13-2008, 11:00 PM Well Ihave one that might be a little on the Rare side I have a 7" aluminum finish Pacific Stereo MR-7 reel. it's in very nice shape I bought a POS Panasonic R2R to get it cost $15.00 it is the take up reel I use on my TEAC 1230 in my office system.
totem 05-14-2008, 10:06 AM Mark can't say I have seen a Pacific Stereo reel.
Do you have a picture?
The ones I see selling for ridiculus prices on ebay are the Technics "1" and "2" black reels. About $60~80 each. Stupid. Might be cheaper to manufacture a couple than buy them.
BTW, I personally hate metal nab reels. I have about 15 of those and only two are perfectly centered. All the others will just vibrate the whole deck in FF/REW.
The reels I like are the plastic Revox ones that don't need the NAB adapter. Perfectly centered and lightweight, are more gentle on the brakes as well.

The finish on the reel is better then it looks the flash did bad things.
Elfasto 05-14-2008, 09:55 PM I have two Realistic metal reels. Even these things sell for pretty good $, considering what they are. Guess I'll keep 'em :)
