I got Neko's new CD today...

I have listened to it several times and it still has not grown on me (yet). It is more folkier than previous CDs. It is quite subtle and does not jump out and pull you in the way her previous CDs have. None of the songs have any hooks and almost none have any choruses. So no humming along from me... However, as always, her voice is amazing.

I was hoping to hear some more magic from Garth Hudson, but he is way back in the mix. It is obvious when the backing band is Calexico and when it is the Sadies. I think I like the stuff with the Sadies better.

I was a little disappointed, but maybe I was expecting too much as Calexico and the Sadies are two of my favorite modern bands and the Band is my favorite 70s band.

Also... there are no pictures of Neko anywhere in the CD, the case, or the booklet :tears:

Been listening to it for over a month, and can only agree with your assessment. It's good, but it's NOT great.

I like the CD, but I think she has done better work. I am not sure it would be the first CD I would give to someone to expose them to her work. However, it will be in heavy rotation for me for awhile. I wonder how mellow and folksy she will be live on this tour?

Here is the order I rank her work (best first)
Furnace Room Lullaby (5 stars)
Canadian Amp (4 1/2 stars)
The Tigers Has Spoken (4 stars)
The Virginian (4 stars)
Blacklisted (4 stars)
Fox Confessor Brings the Flood (3 stars)

Allmusic.com is already calling it album of the year.
