I just got this 27 TV shipped to me from Panasonic as a warranty replacement before moving from PA to CA. It was in the factory box which was in like new condition. I figured I'd UPS is to myself so I could have a TV before I moved my stuff out of storage after I'm settled.

THIS was the result. The box looks like it was rolled here. There are dents and holes all over it. The foam inserts are pulverized. The front of the set is broken, the CRT is loose in the cabinet and one of the speakers fell out. I'm glad it was insured, but I'm still annoyed. UPS just doesn't seem to be able to handle heavy boxes.

Wow!!! That's horrible. It's astonishing that your local UPS could deliver that thing with a straight face - totally oblivious to all the shipping damage that UPS had inflicted upon it. Did they hire the "Samsonite Gorilla" as a delivery driver? :)

I wonder if UPS will try and accuse the Panasonic factory of "inadequate packing"?- after all, Panasonic only engineers their containers for shipping half-way round the world. LOL.

It was on the local UPS truck for 3 days according to the tracking page. Now I know why they were reluctant to drop it off. When the driver came to the door he said I should look at it before they unload it because I might not want it! They said they would pick it up later in the week.

You could argue that the Panasonic packing could have been tougher, but the holes in the box tell the real story. I don't know how you could do that to a box. I wish I had taken some pictures of the box before shipping.

I'll never use UPS to ship a heavy item again. I normally use Fedex, but this was over their weight limit. I think UPS should reduce their weight limit because they clearly aren't set up to handle heavy boxes. The last heavy item I had shipped to me by UPS arrived in similar condition.

That is just awful. But looking at the packing material, maybe Panasonic should do a better job. And holes in the box? Did someone just start kicking the sh#t out of the box?

Ouch! Is that the box you used to ship the TV to Panasonic? Three days on the local delivery truck? :thumbsdn: The item was poorly packed by Panasonic. You have a legitimate claim on your hands.

Where in California? I live in Arizona and have had a consistent abysmal experience with UPS for at least 10 years. It is to the point where it is a dealbreaker, and people in other parts of the country keep telling me what a great experience they have had with UPS. They think I'm crazy, but I say I would be crazy not to have learned my lesson after years of screw-UPS.

I feel your pain. A few years ago I had my Vintage Fender Concert Guitar amp shipped from Michgan to Florida after taking Greyhound down there to play an extended gig. I made arrangements and watched as My amp was packed. It was packed excellent. I did not want to take it on the bus as I thought it may get damaged and it would be better to let the pros handle transporting it. WRONG! I received about a week and a half latter, and every tube in it was detroyed. Most had broken off and caused extensive damage to the tube sockets. There was also a missing protective slat missing from the amp that was there when it was packed. I Filed a claim and had a hard time finding a repairman who would work with ups. I finally got it fixed, But it never sounded the same, and goes through tubes real fast. I should have just drug it on the bus.

I feel bad for you, good luck collecting from them, they like to just pocket all that insurance money, remember, whover accepted it for shipping might also have additional insurance and clout, Dave. UPS; :nono:

PS - After things settle down, maybe complain here; Complaints (http://www.complaints.com/)

It's hard to tell, but it was reasonably well packed. The front top styrofoam caps are completely gone and the bottom ones are badly damaged. There's so much damage to the set that I can't even imagine what they did to it. I've tossed old TVs out the door onto the drive when disposing of them and they don't get nearly as badly damaged.

How do people ship things like this? Obviously UPS is not the way to do it.

Well, they said it wasn't properly packed. What do I do now? Threaten to take them to court?

No threats...just do it. They regularly settle up in small claims court, or so I hear.

The packing was adequate for the manufacturer, it should have been fine for UPS.

Well, UPS returned the TV to me (with even more damage). They managed to put several more large breaks in the cabinet and shatter the CRT taking it from San Mateo to SF and back (like 20 miles round trip). There's clearly a serious problem with UPS in the bay area! The fact that the loose CRT was intact when it was first delivered tells me it broke loose immediately before it was delivered.

I've scheduled an in person inspection. If they don't pay I'll take them to court.

UPS asked me to e-mail them some pictures of the box and TV. While I was going over my pictures, I noticed this mark on the bottom of the box that lines up with a hole in the front of the box. It looks to me like they ran a fork lift, or something trhough it.

It's all moot now because they called me back this afternoon and said that the claim forms were on their way! Based on the pictures they said someone placed something on top of the box which pushed some of the foam out of position and allowed it to get damaged. Yeah, right.... I guess they have to try to save face.

WoW! that's horrible. I just had the worst experience with ups my self.
I told my self I was never going to use them again, and 3 days later I went back. We'll see. :scratch2:

It's a month later (and a lots of phone calls, faxes and e-mails later) and I just received a check for $704.93 from UPS. That covers the cost of the set and my original UPS shipping cost. It was a lot of work, but UPS did the right thing in the end.

Outstanding! I would have taken odds that UPS would have weasled out somehow. Great to see it when the "little people" win one for a change.
