View Full Version : when not playing vintage, what new stuff are you running?
thedelihaus 03-21-2006, 07:42 PM Just curious what newer stuff people are running.
I've heard great stuff about the Outlaw receivers. Anyone own one? And how about new NAD? I almost picked one of the NAD receivers up a few years back.
What about newly issued speakers? Any outstanding items?
My new gear is mostly good quality budget. I'm running a Marantz 4320 receiver for general daytime listening and nighttime listening. Enjoy the built-in shutoff timer and the remote control when I'm in bed. Hooked via a long cable and RCA splitter to an iPod that acts as a mini-music server.
Also run an Onkyo 502 home theater receiver which is very affordable (new model is the 503) and does well enough for me for movies, paired to an exceptional-performing Onkyo 5-disc DVD player/changer. Speakers are a pair of Polk R-15s and rounded out with Cambridge Soundworks Basscube 8 subwoofer, center channel and surrounds.
Speaking of Cambridge Soundworks, I also have some model 6s and 17s- both great, underrated speakers. The smallish 17s are a dream.
Everything else I own is vintage, which I'm very happy about.
phidauex 03-21-2006, 08:01 PM My two new things are the two things I own that I didn't aquire broken. ;)
I've got a Pioneer DV-656A universal DVD player. Unfortunately, it doesn't do SACD, but it does do DVD-A, and nearly every little VCD/SVCD format ever created. Its connected to a Pioneer VSX-815 receiver, which I've been raving about recently. Its got the 5.1 analog ins for DVD-A, 7.1 analog preouts so I can use the 'good' amps, a little auto-setup mic, etc. Decent little internal amps too, for an HT box. Great value, and very satisfying for movies and non-critical listening.
But thats it, nothing else new...
peace,
sam
riffer 03-21-2006, 08:17 PM The only vintage I use are my Sansui tuners - currently using the TU-317.
Rest of the system is Ortofon Rondo Bronze/VPI JWM-9/VPI Aries Scout/Trigon Vanguard II + Volcano II/Simaudio Moon Nova/Simaudio Moon i-5/Totem Arro.
I'm looking forward to building an all Sansui second system in the future, but no room right now.
jbrocious 03-21-2006, 08:43 PM Denon HDCD/MP3 player
Onix Rocket RS150s
this is mated with my vintage gear tho
soundmotor 03-21-2006, 08:52 PM Just curious what newer stuff people are running.
Right now a Yamaha DP-u50 preamp & Parasound HALO A23 being fed by a vintage Lafayette SS tuner that is so good it is mind blowing.
Rickman 03-21-2006, 08:59 PM sony str-de998 reciever, with vintage large advents
Unican_Eric 03-21-2006, 09:15 PM The only thing I am running besides vintage is my home theater setup. Its a JVC
RX 6501V. When I am not watching the tube I put on my SA-9100 or my SX-1050. They are both in the same room.
Inspiribomb 03-21-2006, 09:24 PM I mix the old with the new. My only really new piece of gear is my NHT W2 subwoofer setup, which I couldn't be more pleased with.
Fisher-Dave 03-21-2006, 09:30 PM Well lets see? Sense my old Pioneer cd player went on a skipping spree,I now use a new Sanyo DVD player. I must be getting old as I used to allways get up and turn on the Fisher when I tuned the tv on music channels on DTV. Now I sometimes just watch and listen through our little 25" Samsung sterio tv. Seems kinda scary :scratch2:
P. Shivers 03-21-2006, 10:07 PM I use new gear in my HT set-ups, mixed with older speakers. In the main system, I have a Yamaha HTR-5650 receiver, Pioneer DV578A universal disc player hooked up to Boston Acoustics A-100, CenterSat 7, and CR6 speakers, with a Dayton 10" sub from PE. I also have a Yamaha HTR-5630 in the bedroom, hooked up to BA A-60s, and another CenterSat 7. For music other than SACD and DVD audio, I use my vintage gear.

I've heard great stuff about the Outlaw receivers. Anyone own one? SNIP.
Yep I have an Outlaw 1050. Very decent sounding reciver. I used it for a short time as my main stereo rig as the AU717 was down with leaky caps, and I stopped when the 9090DB came in.
As a HT 6.1 system we are very impressed with it. Snell Type EIII for fronts, Type EII rears Klipsh KG2.2's centers and a M&K V-2B powered sub. :thmbsp:
I'm currently powering a pair of Altecs with a little Teac chip (Tripath) amp and am pretty pleased with the results.
Beobloke 03-22-2006, 02:56 AM Bang & Olufsen Beosound 9000 CD player/tuner, Beolab 8000 speakers, Beovision Avant TV/DVD player and Mordaunt Short MS909 subwoofer.
This lot keeps wifey happy in the lounge whilst i'm knee-deep in old stuff in my listening room! :thmbsp:
Mark W. 03-22-2006, 03:25 AM The only new thing in my system is the Monster PowerCenter MKS3500MKII
The only other thing I have newer then 1985 in my Por-Ject 1.2 Turntable and it's at least 5-6 years old.
NO Modern audio gear basically.
Jack Keck 03-22-2006, 10:37 AM My HT stuff is less than five years old.
But not much less.
Check my sig for details.
soundmotor 03-22-2006, 01:52 PM I'm currently powering a pair of Altecs with a little Teac chip (Tripath) amp and am pretty pleased with the results.
TEAC A-L700P set by any chance?
the-real-mandak 03-22-2006, 02:50 PM I have a KISS DP-1500 DVD; it plays everything with a picture and has integrated Ethernet and a sloth for Wi-Fi network. This allows me to play video directly from the internet or my computer. The optical out goes into my Yamaha CX-1000 (I don't run surround at home).
My TDL RTL3IIs are from 1998, the CX-1000 is from 1988. So not really vintage.
Chris Brown 03-22-2006, 03:10 PM I use a Pioneer D811s as the main receiver for my HT. It is great because it has all the important features that I wanted (Dolby Digital-EX, DTS-ES 6.1 Discrete, 5.1 Pre-outs, 7.1 speaker outputs, 5.1 analog inputs, component switching, etc). About the only area where it is lacking is power, which was solved by running cables from the front pre-outs and using the amp section of my Pioneer SX-1050 that has something wrong with the pre-amp section.
Drybasement 03-22-2006, 03:37 PM Well it's not new but it is only five years old and that's my AV Receiver which is an Onkyo TX-DS575 with Paradigm speakers all around including the sub. The new addition is the Denon DVD-1920 multi-player for SACD and DVD-A playback. I also have a Marantz DR-6050 dual tray CD Recorder on the same system that I purchased a few years ago for CD playback and recording.
The two-channel system downstairs sports a new Rotel RCD-1072 CD/HDCD player. Everything else in the 2 channel system is vintage. In fact, the youngest one, the Sansui AU-D11II, is nearly 22 years old now. The Pioneer SX-1250 is pushing 30. Oh, I forgot. The speakers were purchased by me in 1988 (Cerwin Vega D-7) which makes them only 18 years old. I'm not sure if you'd consider that old enough to be vintage or not.
TEAC A-L700P set by any chance?
I believe so.
Dynacophil 03-23-2006, 05:31 AM Hi
what is really new...
new is for me the mid 90s PAs-4 and cdv-1 :) compared to the other stuff from 60s and 70s
but newer may be the Sharp MD-MT 99 - oops, MD already died? not new..? MMh
my Pio DVD-Player is less then 5 years old... maybe this could be "new"
yes - it works. not much more to tell about it.
can't find new stuff here except my cellphone or computer equipement.
Helge
I just put my HT together since Christmas. The only thing vintage are the speakers. (check sig)
MaDHaTteR 03-23-2006, 12:35 PM heres a modern setup i put together for my dad, the speakers are vinatge tho
consists off a yammaha NS amp, technics CDP and a pair of mourdant short ms400 speakers. great sounding little setup, the amp and cd player was 50 pounds from salvation army, and the speakers were 10 pounds collection only on ebay.they acctualy look quite alot nicer in person the flash seems to show up preety bad on the amp and cdp.
