Grumpy,

I musta missed round one!

I would like to try them. I know MikE demo'd them at MAF, but I only heard Brian's system "With", not "without".

What are the demo details?

Enjoy,

TIC

Once Mike is done with his evaluation you will be next up. Keep them for say a week and then pass them on to who ever is next. Then just post your thoughts and comments on them here on AK.

MikE,

I know you are very busy (or bored) as I've seen your post at the AR Cable forum, but are you ever gonna get around to sending the Daruma's my way?!!

BTW, were you drinking when you posted at AR?;) Or is it fishin' season (as he opens up a HUGE can-o-worms!!)?

See ya,

TIC

Sorry about the delay. Which tread were you referring to? I still like to post there occationally. As I still have some friends there, and even if we have little to agree on Audio-wise we realize the sillyness of continuing to argue over that. I'm curious, did you compare the new amp with Randy's Korneff head-to-head? Does he still have it?

MikE,

Sorry, don't remember the exact thread, but it seemed that your post was meant to "inflame" a certain segment of the AR cable croud, and it did!!! Actually, it was funny to read how upset some people get about the pro/con cable issue.

Anyway, no I did not compare the Dodd to Randy's JK as he sold it!! I did take the Dodd over to Dave's to listen on the mighty Parker Audio Behemoths. Dave has done several mods to his Zen and man did it sound different that the last time I heard it. It had "super extension" on the top end. The Dodd sounded very good, but I think I actually like it better with my speakers. I think the extra power really suits the De Capos.

Let me know when you are done with the Darumas.

Enjoy,

TIC

After all that public pre-purchase buildup and nary a reason why? That doesn't help the prospective SET buyer at all.

sasaki,

Well, it wasn't my amp, so I don't think I can speak for Randy. However, this I do know. Randy is COMPLETELY satisfied with his speakers (Parker Audio Heil/Peerless Behemoth) and Digital front end (Camelot Morganna as transport, genesis Digital Lens, Camelot Uther mk 4) which has built in volume control. The JK doesn't really play nicely with passive pre-amps, so maybe the JK wasn't necessarily the best match.

In that scenario, the obvious thing to do was keep the speakers and digital rig and pass the JK on to someone that could use it as it was intended.

Enjoy,

TIC

Whatever "hype" there was came from his "buddies" not Randy himself. I was very excited when he told me he was getting the JK45 because I wanted to hear and see it myself. While Tom and I compared the Moth to the JK45 in Randy's system I've not heard the re-vamped Zen. I trust his judgement, though if it were me I'd have found a way to keep it!

Tim, about the Daruma's. I believe TIC has them.

I used the Daruma’s under my AA DDS.Pro transport in place of the stock [rubber] feet. Basically my results were all positive; they lowered the noise-floor, enhanced micro-dynamics and better revealed inner-detail. Naturally, the first effect had a direct result on the last. My first exposure to the Daruma’s was at the MAF. Brian [Venus Hi-Fi] conducted some quick A/B tests with them under various components. The results we found was that they were very “component-specific”, they liked it best under front-end components [CDP/transports] but that either alone or in concert didn’t positively impact other gear, like pre-amps. And as with all components or tweaks, the Daruma’s are “system-specific”. YMMV.

I read some interesting comments on them: Their effect is like that of an air spring, but across only two dimensions. This type of isolation doesn’t so much absorb vibration or “cushion” the component as much as create a mechanical low-pass filter through the motion it induces.
