Since I tend to worry about eyes a lot I kinda got to thinking about singers that had monocular vision

Sammy Davis Jr ....his last hit was Frankie Valli's classic "My Eye Adores You"

Sandy Duncan

Ray Sawyer of Dr Hook, this may have been a gimmick

Gene Maclellan PEI's own,The "put your Hand in The Hand" guy

Anybody else know of some?

Hey Opt- whats the deal with the latest technology on laser surgery to correct for near-sightedness? Safe or risky? And after its done, will the eyes STAY 20/20?

I ask because I am 39 and curious to know, if I had the correction done, would it be in vain since most people become farsighted (need reading glasses)somewhere in their 40's?

My eyes were 20/20 as a kid- but I noticed the nearsightedness around the end of high school/early college when I needed glasses to see the blackboard (or else sit in a desk closer to the board).

I just cant get into wearing glasses 24-7 (other than prescription sunglasses- but thats just for the daytime of course). I only wear them when I drive the car. And Contacts?! - Noo way- I could NEVER bring myself to stick my finger in my eye- I dont know how people can do that!

I imagine the computer screen doesnt help the eyes either.

And how about fluorescent lights like I have in my basement? I think they are horrible for your eyes. I think the warm incandescent light is much better- yes/ no?

Laser surgery is safe,we have a number of patients that have had it done.Sometimes you nail it the first time other times you have to do enhancements or basically re-tune what you have already did.
Some patients end up with a slight correction for astigmatism(a curvature of the cornea) Most have been wandering the desert with a -5.00 to a -12.00 Rx so a slight rx does not bother them
The best candidates are in the abovementioned bracket, they are motivated for success,no more coke bottles.Check with your local Optometrist, who will do an evaluation of your eyes.

Everyone on the planet needs a reading RX when they reach 40
or over, reason being it takes the eye longer to fixate at close quarters.

Incandescent light is best, flourescent won't hurt your eyes, nothing will hurt the eye, well maybe a foreign object travelling at 20mph might do some damage. You might try an anti-reflection coating on your lenses, this will eliminate glare and may promote a greater wearing time.

Best Regards

Hey Doc- so are you saying that if I did have the surgery done, my eyes will be 20/20 but if and when I succumb to the over 40 farsightendness affliction, that it will throw the 20/20 off and I would need to have the surgery done again to re-obtain the 20/20 ?

So far I can see this fine on my screen (though my left eye is definitely stronger than my right) : :)

Fred, no you would not have to get laser surgery again.Loss of accomadation at the reading is called presbyopia. This is a natural occurence that we all deal with at 45 0r so.
All individuals whether laser patients or patients that are 20\20 will need reading prescriptions at that age. However the greater your nearsightedness(myopia) the better accomodation at near we have,I did not start to wear a bifocal until I was 46yrs old(Iam 82 now, just kidding)
My only caveat is that if you have a mild correction for distance i would save your money and buy audio gear!!
