i got a akai gx 266d. i cannot seem to get it to work correctly. i beleve i have the tape in correctly i got the tape inbetween the shaft in the middle that spins and the rubber wheel. like that it does play ok but i cannot get it to rewwinde and FFW very sometimes the FFW will go quite fast but the rewide barly moves if at all. i know the motors all work if unthread the tape and let them spin they spin very fast but as soon as i run the tape thtough all the rollers it will not work.

Unless it's direct drive for Fast Forward and Rewind, it sounds like you have a belt slipping.

it appears to be direct drive there are no belts that i can see just 2 motors connected to each shaft.

i did some poking around with it i dont know what i did but the FF seems to work ok now but the rewind is very slow.
