I have a 1976ish vintage Technics RS-631 cassette deck that I've had since new. Put it away several years ago because when you push play, one VU meter pegs and you hear this hellatious loud pulsating hum come from the one channel. I hate to throw it away, and I'm not trying to sell it so I wondered if anyone here has experience working on or has a desire to work on a deck that old. :D

If the sound that you hear is more like a motorboat sound, you can fix it yourself.

If you pop the top off of the deck, look for a long sliding switch (about 3-4 inches long).
This is the REC/Playback switch. With the deck unplugged, you can spray DeOxit in this
switch while working it back and forth.

This should take care of the problem... might have to repeat the process a couple of times,
but it should fix it.

Motorboat sound is not really how I'd describe it. You know if you unplug an RCA plug and touch the tip when power is present that gawdaful loud hum? This is like that but it pulses in unison to the VU meter pegging. Are we still talking about the same potential fix for that? I would be very happy if that's all I had to do. :beerchug:

Is it from the deck itself, or from the speakers with the deck as a source?

oh it's definetly the tape deck, when I first tried recording with it, it was quiet as a mouse. As soon as I hit rewind it slowly started to squeal. Now when I hit play, ff, or rwd it squeals. The pitch of the squealing slows once the transport stops until it stops too. Belt?

Could be belt or idler tire... have you tried different tapes?

it's doing it even without a tape in the transport. Can I try lubing the idler? You don't think it's the belt?

Some Caig ProGold lubricant spray on the drive motor pulley and she's now quiet as a mouse. Thanks again to SPL db.

Just makes me happier that I joined this forum. :beerchug:

It could be a belt... lubricating the shaft that the idler tire rides is something that you can do now (replacing a
belt you'll have to wait for the belt...).

It could also be either of the hubs as well... without hearing it first hand it's hard to tell.

Do you have a pen oiler?
