View Full Version : What do you use to show off your Home Theater

Thor's post got me to thinking there are a lot of great movies for Home Theater. So, what movie "ROCKS" your world when it comes to seeing movies at home?
I think one of the the, if not "the", top movie has to MATRIX. The lobby scene is a classic. Often overlooked is the opening fight scene. When she kicks the guy in the head, the room moves.
Opening scenes in BLADE and THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS.
For all around action, most anything directed by John Woo.

I like the opening scene with the F-18's hitting the flight deck in Top Gun. The screech of the tail hooks grabbing is fantastic.

Like I said in another thread, the "Jurassic" movies are very good.
The others already mentioned are certainly good too.
Most action/adventure movies are fun. The better sound really adds to the movie. (Let alone the visual improvment)
The newest Starwars is a nice one on HT-DVD
Any movie on DVD, vs older versions on VHS are obviously much improved in the newer format.
We don't rent a VHS movie hardly at all, unless it's just not available on DVD.
As said before, it's just a matter of time........VHS will be extinct like the Jurassic beasts.
If you don't have at least 5.1 channel HT, your missing out on a lot.
It's just a better "experience" than I thought it would be, before I first put the system together.
My HT system is totally separate from the stereo system. Different rooms as well.

Toy Story 2 - opening scene with Buzz
Saving Private Ryan
Days of Thunder
The "Beach Landing" in "Saving Private Ryan" is quite spectacular sound wise but is a bit graphic and not for the weak stomached.
"Days of Thunder" has some great scenes soundwise but I find the picture looks like @ss compared to other DVD's.
I am looking forward to seeing "T2" next weekend, I would think the minigun scene will be fantastic.
I would also like to see "Last of the Mohicans" I think the scene of the fort battle with the cannons and muskets going of will be cool.
Perhaps the "pod racer" scene from episode one of "Star Wars" would be good too.
I have heard from others that "The fast and the furious" and "U571" both sound amazing.

Yep, those are good too !!
Have seen about all those on Wards list, and they all get a "thumbs up"
Also:
The Patriot (Mel's 1770's saga)
Wards if you liked "Blade" you gotta see "Blade II" more action and super disgusting creepy crawlie monsters!
I like your list but I prefer "Aliens" to "Alien" ;)

Debby does Dallas, or any of the Taboo movies with Tajea Rea...oh, wait those movies don't sound very good......Oh, well...I don't have a HT system either, but with these movies, I've never noticed :D
Does anybody know if the Japanese movie Ran has been put on DVD? I would get a HT system up just for that movie alone.

Well in "We Were Soldiers" if your system has enough to it a helicopter will come in over your shoulder and land in your living room. This is most effective if you have a system that will allow subwoofers at the same time as full range speakers all the way around. Really the best sound effect I have ever heard, and I have a lot of DVDs just for the sound effects.

Hi VH,
A quick search at Amazon shows 2 versions of Ran released.
Of these, AVOID the cheaper Fox Lorber version.
This has crap sound and an even crappier picture...wrong aspect ratio, non-anamorphic.
The Masterworks edition or the boxset (both feature the same improved DVD) are well worth the extra $$$.

Alien scared the hell out of me on the big screen and is still scary on DVD. That was one scary monster with hydrocloric acid for blood and crome jaws!
Alien is a good movie but I like Aliens betterer ;)

Which one of the Star Trek flicks is it where they seperate the saucer from the rest of the ship and crash into a planet's surface?
Saw that at a friends place once....way cool....
This is hard. There are many good ones. All those that Wards mentioned except I haven't seen Blade. I like the colors in Back To The Future 1 & 2. I have these on LD.
Oh...The Abyss. Those artificially illiminated underwater mini-sub action shots are totally awesome on the BIG screen!

there is a scene in the haunting which just grabs me everytime. it is right after when liam neesons character explains the history of the house. there is a loud thowk that comes out of the left surround. makes me jump every time. awesume with DTS-ES 6.1 discrete. the movie is only ok but the soundtrack makes for a great reference disk.

The disney movie Alladin. When he is entering the pyramid and the line is ' Who disturbs my slumber" the kids were scurrying everywhere as the floor started to shake. Paradigm front, rear, center and powered sub. Onkyo sv70-pro receiver. All the speakers are gone now but I still have the receiver, kinda odd, an HT receiver with a phono input...
WOW
Suprised nobody mentioned TitanAE. Some outstanding surrounds as well as it WILL work your subs. If you have not seen it and are thinking, oh it's just a cartoon, I would encourage you to go at least rent it.

Hey there mOOn :saywhat: No offense there buddy, but you might want to consider a different user name. I've been around this place since it began & although my user name is "moondog" I go by "mOOn" spelled exactly like you spelled your's. (what's the odds?)
Might cause some confusion down the road & I'd hate for you to take the blame for something stupid I might say. :D
Just a thought, but it's up to you ;)

BTW... Welcome to AK. It's a great place to hang!
Hmmm. Well, I there is a slight difference, you spell your's with the letter "O" I use the number zero in mine. But I do see your point. I will try to think of something new.
I think we were just mooned by Thor.
I just got the widescreen special edition of "Jurrasic Park" and I gotta say the Tyrannasurus scene where he busts outta his compound and terrorizes the kids in the SUV is pretty choice! Bonus: it's in 1.85 so no black bars on a 16:9 HDTV ;)

Lots of good choices here, agreed on most.
A must-have disc, that you can give a SOLID demo - start to finish - Imax Super Speedway. Wards, you NEED this in your collection, trust me. Great LFE info, great side to side and front to rear pans, lots of dynamic range. Not to mention, its FUN to watch.

Thor gets my vote (but no moon-shot, though) for Jurrasic Park.
I just think the sound effects are awesome and love the T-Rex part where the 30 Hz (?) foot stomp are so low in freq. that you "see" them in the water before you feel them and hear them!
The opening scenes and the scenes in the ice rings of Titan A.E are fantastic.

The scene from ApocalypseNow where the choppers are attacking the VC village.........they seem to fly right through my room.....all you need is "the smell of napalm in the morning".......
As for the video side.....I just put on a HD station........
I normally put on Eric Clapton's DVD One More Car One More Rider
Great DTS sound!

I have a new one. Has anyone paid attention during the shooting and fight scenes in Pirates of the Caribean? The little bullets go popping by left and right and behind you. Sounds great!
Also, the sonic bombs in Star Wars EP II. Where Obi is following the Fetts and they attack.
As far as 5.1 sound.....Diana Krall DTS CD.

The cannons are nice in Pirates of the Carribean too ;)
I agree w/ everyones choices.
One that I like that nobody has mentioned is Ghosts in the Darkness. You can almost feel the Lions sneaking up on Val Kilmer or Micheal Douglas.:yikes:
One other thing is everyones HT system will soon be obsolete with 8.1 coming out. When will it ever stop????:dunno:

Black Hawk Down has (as far as I know) the lowest recorded bass of any DVD or recording ever. If you want to check out your subs, somewhere in Ch4 right when someone say’s "F**K Irene" there is a 10-12Hz fundamental from the Blackhawk’s in the background. I had to watch my sub (cone move) while the scene was playing to believe it, it didn’t even rattle anything in the room, just light pressure pulses from the corners of the room beating on your chest. It’s quite an impressive effect if your sub will go that low (in room) and you can get enough amplitude to feel full glory of the low blade pulses. My dual Maelstrom 18” Sonosubs will do moderate levels in room during this scene, but I can only imagine how much better a Tumult or 2 must feel like during this passage.

Oh and btw.. I have found another movie I like.... I know it may not be for everyone as it would really seem to be a chick flick, but Moulan Rouge.... Very good audio in that movie. Will really make your system come alive.
I like that movie more than my wife.:p: But to be fair.. I would never watch it on my on a set of TV speakers.. It's definity a theater kind of movie with a great set of audio equipment.

When I first purchased the cs+ system I had my theater located in a ~4500ft^3 room that was my living room and dining room combo with cathedral ceiling and they did very well there. Now I'm in a dedicated HT room around 2500ft^3 and all I can say is they are like a caged Elephant. Simply unbelievable! The kitchen is directly above the theater and you can catch a great foot massage while a movie is playing:D

As long as there are analog outputs on the DVD player, I can keep my system updated. 5.1 is fine with me though, it gets the job done. Went to the theater yesterday and I drive a bit further to this one because the sound is the best in town, which means it meets the standards of the gear most of us own, only it fill a much bigger space.
I have never been able to get the punch in the chest from when the battleship fires off a salvo of 16" guns in Windtalkers like I got in the theater. I think it was left out of the score on the DVD.

Hello, I like using the T2 for showing off the HT system....
The ending to "Drumline" is pretty cool.
I watched "Heat" yesterday and man the gunfire from the bank robbery scene is tight!
Alright, don't make fun of me, but "Finding Nemo" is a great dvd for showing off a theater. It looks great, and the ambient sea sounds surround you to the point that you feel like a diver in the quieter scenes. As far as subwoofers go, U%&! is pretty amazing, eliciting smiles from those who care about such things. I have a Bag End Infra 18 which goes really low. I'd like to add a second for more impact, but the box is huge and I'm outta room. Also, try some pipe organ music for really low lows. I believe there is a nice thread about this on Audiogon, with excellent recommendations for instruments with 32' pipes.
doggone shift key! That's U571, not U%&!, although when you hear the depth charges, you might well exclaim U%&!
I actually loved Toy Story and Toy Story II and Monsters Inc but I gotta say I hated Finding Nemo, seemed to lack all the little insider jokes that only the adults accompanying their children to the movie get ;) That said I agree 'Nemo is an excellent movie for the HT ;)
Can anyone recommend some pipe organ music here? If I can find in on Kazzaa I'll give it a whack ;)
I agree with Monsters, Inc. Funny movie, great sound and picture. I think the humor in Finding Nemo is just a different brand, more of a "Dumb and Dumber" flavor. Being the absolute lowbrow that I am, I found Ellen Degeneris (sp?) very funny. I will try and post a url to an Agon thread with a bunch of great organ recommendations:
