I have been looking at this unit to replace my Yamaha CDC-665. Anyone familiar with this player? Would I notice a big improvement in sound over my current cdp? Suggestions on the best place to buy would be appreciated. I found one place that has it for $466.00, plus shipping. Thanks, Jeff
I've not heard it personally but have a good friend who has heard it extensively. He says it is far better than it ought to be -- especially for the price. He also said to keep an eye out for the upcoming 840C, that it's an even more serious attempt -- for more $$, too.

I've heard the 640v1 and was very impressed. I've been recommending it here for some time, and now that the v2 is out, the v1s are way down in price! Audio Advisor had some in their clearance area and Hot Buys. I suspect they can be had even cheaper, but haven't looked.
The v2s are supposed to be even better, and for not many more $. I'd go for it.

I'd feel remiss if I didn't point out that the Marantz 8260 is also on sale all over the place. IIRC, it can be had for $699. That's more money, but the 8260 is an "A" rated CD and SACD player. Once you hear SACD, it's tough to go back...

640C V2 is a great piece of equippment. Well built. Soundquality is definitely high end.
Wide open soundstage, great channel- and detailseparation. The sound does not induce listenersfatigue, highs nicely rolloff, bass is not artificially extended. Avoid the lower end like 540C and 340C. They are nowhere near the quality of the 640C and IMHO not worth the money.
