So, I got home and had just finished hooking up all this new (well, slightly used, uh, "vintage") stereo gear. I looked around, needing a likely test subject... ahh, the padded envelope from CD Baby. Yep, Sweet Sue's new CD. What a glamorous cover! From the first drum stroke these musicians had my undivided attention. Yeah, Baby! This is some great jazz, my kinda music!!! The energy level is high all the way through, the playing perfect... just perfect. If you love jazz, this will put a smile on your face!
Her playing is effortless, flawless, every line, phrase, note, perfect. But more than being technically perfect, musically her playing is just totally enjoyable.
If I had to compare Sue to the giants of the past, which I hate to do, Sue is Sue, but if I had to, I would have to compare her more to Cannonball or Sonny Stitt, rather than Coltrane or Miles. She's the kind of player you'd hate to follow onstage, you'd have to slink away in shame. And the kind you love to listen to.
If you only buy one Jazz CD this year, this is it. :music:
