I was driving around and thought of something and wonder if it would work. What if someone happen to have a tuner/reciever with an amp, and a regular amp and say a couple of mono-blocks, and a home theater with 5.1 decoder. Could you run lines from the R/L front, R/L rear, Center and Sub from the home theater to your various amps? It would be a mess with all the volumes but something I was thinking about. My mind wanders when I drive. I guess my real question is: are those 5.1 outputs line level? Or am I missing something?

Strange answer:

Yes, you can do that. It would work. And it may work well. It also depends on the grounding in the different amps. You might pick up the world's worst hum. And again, you may not.

HEY! Give it a try! You only waste time.

Some home theater receivers have line-level outs, and some don't. If yours does, what you suggest will work fine. If you have a separate processor rather than a receiver, then of course you can use multiple amps - I do that in my setup.

My Sony 200 Disc DVD palyer has a built in 5.1 decoder, with line level outputs, but no way to set the volume 'pre-decoder'. Due to my vintage affliction, I have it running to a marantz 1152DC for the fronts, old kenwood receiver for the rears, and (until recently) a HK PM665 int. amp for the center and sub(s). It is definitely a pain setting the volume on all the different receivers, but it gives me ultimate flexibility.

Ideally, I want all-vintage-Marantz surround power, which I'm working towards. Currently my front left and right are the old original Large Advents, so I don't need a sub right now. I plan to do some DIY double advent enclosures to give me even more low end.

Best part: the whole system was bought over time from local thrift stores, except for the Marantz 1152DC, which I received for free for helping a friend's mother move
