Got my spec 4 amp today and all I can say is wow! This thing was obviously somebody's baby as it is in great shape and very clean inside and out. Thanks to Seadzz I was able to give it a tune up before I hooked it up; I didn't think it was possible but my system sounds better than ever. Not like a night and day difference but just more detailed, more dynamic and seems to have better control of the woofers at high volume than my sa-8800 ever had. If anyone is thinking of buying one of these, you won't be sorry.

Congrats, Thats a great power amp. I do not have one myself but I hear nothing but good things about it. Enjoy :thmbsp:
BTW what are you using for a preamp?

I pulled the jumpers on my sa-8800 and am using it for a pre-amp until I can raise the funds for a spec-1. But I have to say I'm pretty happy with it now. I guess I am hesitant to sell the 8800 to buy the spec-1; although I may talk myself into it.

Tehcnut,

Glad to offer the info you needed....its what AK is all about.

To other folks working on SPEC 2 and SP 4 power amps one note of caution aside form the normal (unplug before sticing fingers inside). There are varistors in the Driver section that are screwed to the heatsing and soldered to the PCB. If you need to disassemble the driver boards for a recaping or other repair be very careful of the lead wires on these varistors. If you bend them once too many times they will snap and you will be UACWAP.

Best to take the mounting screwm off the heat sink first and then you can freely access that PCB without fear...guess how seadzz found out about these wires? You guessed I snaped one. Fortunately Echowars bailed me out so a big hats off goes to him :thmbsp:

One thing I almost forgot. The panel lamps are 8V 300ma Fuse style and there are four. You can get them from Dave ( http://home.earthlink.net/~dwojo/index.html) at his site.

Good luck with that amp I'm sure you will really enjoy it

I appreciate the kind offer siamac, but even if we worked out a trade I still think the shipping from Germany would kill me.

If I am ever in Germany I may take you up on that one though. :D

Seadzz how is your spec 1 & 4 restoration project coming?

cmk59,
Please, from now on, put this type of a post down in the "classifieds" forum, there is a section there called "wanteds" and it's free.

Thanks,

It looks very clean on the inside, is that black wire running across it from your multimeter?

How much is the new equivalent of something with the same sort of specs as that and what brand would make it? I'd imagine it would be about 4k to get something that well built now.

Yes, the black wire is hooked to a multimeter, I was letting the amp warm up and 'settle' while I was adjusting the bias and offset. As far as a modern equivalent I guess the closest thing might be in the $2500.00 range.
