It a "REAL" Leather Plycraft Chair, not a $3000 Herman Miller, but if I would have found a $3000 chair I would had to sell it, this way I feel okay keeping it..They do sell for $500+

I've still never seen those arms on a Plycraft. Selig, Allied and Plycraft all made sturdy replicas of the H-M/Eames 670, so it's hard to go wrong.

It is tough to say there is no label on it any more...but it could be a Selig. I am no expert. I just looked on Google and they are simular.

I just got 2 "GRATIS" power supplies , you know 110 ac to 12 volt , Could I use these to build my own powered subs ? also acquired a "PRO-STUDIO" stand ? I think ? I was going to use for the box . maybe use a car amp , I have 2 Pioneer car subs to go in the box . would these power supplies be useful for such a collaboration of junk ?I think I will listen to some Deep Purple and have a beer or 10 while awaiting responses !!!!!

I scored a tripp-lite power conditioner (800 watt max) in cood shape and a set of minumus 7s in mint condition, I mean it looks like they have never been played, except by me that is , and oh yeah they are silver aluminum..

Snagged a Pioneer SA-750 today. Sounds good--50 clean watts per channel. $6.98.

The thrid picture shows the heatsink, which is a tour-de-force of Japanese skill in metals manufacturing. It's machined, in a manner very elegant and economical of material. The fins have all been 'pared-off' of the original aluminum workpiece, while remaining attached at the base, and bent into identical curve shapes.

One of the woofers will need re-foaming eventually, completely intact but split when I poked it. Will glue it up for now and see how it goes. The other speaker looks like it has been re-foamed in recent times as the surround is darker and springier, and the dust cap looks different.

Now all I need to find is a nice heavy old Sansui or Yamaha or similar to make them really sing!

I'd never actually heard a set of vintage JBL's to be honest, was pretty impressed when I hooked them up to a modest little JVC integrated that I have at work! Very nice bass in these things, the speakers hadn't been used for ages so I took it a bit easy on them at first but they seemed to go great!

I frequent yard sales in my area, and a few weeks ago I landed my current turntable (MCS Series 6601). Luckily, my son noticed it. I was busy going through the guys vinyl collection, which included some great finds. The turntable was practically new in the box, with everything. I proceeded to inquire what he wanted for it and he said, "$15?". SOLD! Absolutely loving it.

Today i walk into my local Goodwill, and they have some Realistic Nova-7Bs, but no price, and I'm bleeding speakers right now so I passed.

Then I walk in thru the back entrance to talk to them about a donation, and sitting on the floor is a huge Pioneer Quad R2R (I didn't get a model number) and a Sansui QRX-7500. Both were as close to 'new in the box' as I have ever seen - original plastic bags, styrofoam, wires still neatly wrapped in bags. I asked how much and they said it would take them at least 24 hours to price them and get them on the floor. I left my number and told them to call me when they know. He said it may take longer because they have a whole stack of electronics to go thru. Arrgh! I bet you anything there's a Marantz 2385 sitting in that pile waiting for me to rescue it.

After my G-33000/JBL L-150 scroe two days ago I'm starting to think I should play the lottery this week!

Today's treasure is an Allied 339 receiver.

Can't find anything about it. It needs a good cleaning and probably a few caps and bulbs replaced, but it sounds pretty good.

Anybody ever heard of it before? Wattage, anything?

And it needs some sort of goofy plugs to connect speakers, but I've read about the ways around that problem here.

I craved one of those Allieds when I was a kid. Judging from your description of the goofy speaker plugs...probably sourced from Pioneer. One horizontal prong & one vertical, right? If I had one of my old Allied catalogs here at work I could give you specs...but I'm betting 25 WPC or so.

Today I walked into the Goodwill and the first thing in front of me were these bigger-than-usual-at-a-thrift speakers. So I grab one and turn it around, and it says EPI. :D

They were M110's, $5.00 each. I took them home and fed them some cello. They ate it up. First thing I've A/B'd with the Boston Acoustic A-60s that edged them out. Stronger, more textured bass.

They will need some work to be pretty, but the surrounds seem good, and they sound great.

Yeah, one vertical and one horizontal. I can either do it right with spade lugs, or just jam the wires in.

25 watts may be a little generous from what I've seen inside--more like 15. Still, it doesn't take a lot of watts to make a good sound.

It is really designed to be worked on. Everything is available by removing the top housing or the bottom plate. The FM tuner is pretty amazing for a receiver of this size.

I went back to GW to look for the quad gear (see my previous post) and instead found a set of Epi 200Cs that need refoaming for $14.99.

They are in pretty nice shape, the only real cosmetic flaw being missing EPI badges from the grill.

I wasn't familiar with Epi, but recognized the name from Don Q's post from yesterday.

Good work, Doctor! I'm happy to get a partial credit for your excellent score!

It has been observed here (http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1417320&postcount=9) that EPIs typically benefit from recapping....

Picture two indicates the price was $5.99, including cartridge.

Pictures 4 and 5 indicate two small items missing, however:

1. Stylis for cartridge
2. Power cord. Anyone got a cord like this?

That looks like a standard two conductor connector. You should be able to find one without looking too hard. Many laptop and external hard drives have a similar wire running into their power supplies. Newer ones have a square end - I'd just whittle it down with a knife.

Picked up a Denon DRA-300 for $10 at the GW today. Not a bad looking unit for '82-'83. Silver, just before everything went black, I guess. 33Wpc, amp is all discrete, except one chip which appears to be part of the protection circuit. Phono pre and most of the tuner is chips. Very clean layout inside, appears to be well built. 4-ohm capable, driving a pair of KLH-20's right now with authority. Pretty basic unit, but well designed, good ergonomics.

Looks like this one:

A little follow up if anybody is interested.

I did get some information from a site:

"Power output - 40W, 11W RMS/channel; Response - 20-40,000 Hz; Harmonic distortion - 1% at rated power; I M distortion - 0.22%; Hum and Noise -65db (Mag phono & Aux)"

Just went back to check on the quad gear (see post 2266 on the last page), and nada.

However, they did a have a decent set of JBL 4311Bs for $40 - until I saw the tear in one of the midrange speakers. I bought them anyway. I have really, really wanted to check out a set of the JBL studio monitors from that time frame.

Now I just need one LE5-10, four 128Hs from my L150s, and two EPI 8" woofers refoamed for my 200Cs.

Maybe I should slow down. But I'm going back tomorrow. I want that damn quad R2R!

So I took a risk this afternoon and asked the guy working in donations at my local thrift about a big piece I had seen through the open door to the back room. I expected him to tell me to beat it, but he eagerly agreed to test on the spot what I had identified as an Onkyo TX-8500 receiver. After a few minutes he came back with bad news; no speaker output. He said I could have it as-is for $9.99, and I thought it was well worth the risk as it was in excellent cosmetic condition. I took the 50+ lb beast home, hooked it up, DEACTIVATED THE MUTING!!... and am enjoying one of my best thrift scores ever.

Hey, was it a straight TX-8500 or the later MkII with the station presets (that I still can't figure out!) I got mine for $10 also, at a thrift store.

I hit a couple stores today-- not much except ONE really nice Advent mini. Price tag said $6 for the set, so there MUST have been another one. I couldn't find it though.

Yesterday on a whim I stopped by my local GW with my son while the wife was shopping at Target. From down the isle I see 2 tall slender speakers with what looked like real wood finish. I get closer and notice they are Boston Acoustics T1030's in the real walnut finish! Holy Crap!! No one has even bothered to whisk these away yet?!? They are in excellent condition, and marked at $14.99 each! I take them to the counter, pay for them, shove them in my trunk and after picking up the wife went home and cleaned them up. After applying some lemon oil to the cabs and hooking them up to our bedroom setup ( a meager SONY reciever that will now HAVE to be upgraded ) I played some ASIA and Otmar Leibert. All drivers works, nice clean music. What a steal.

Just 1 hour earlier I had driven over 1 hour to meet with a guy that was selling some KEF bookshelf's C-40's on Craigslist for $75.00. He did'nt even want to meet me half way  . When he showed me the speakers I noticed the tweeters had some crud on them and they looked in very poor shape. I asked the guy if he'd take 60 bucks cause the tweeters were going to need replaceing. He got offended and said "everyone tries to cut my price, everyone wants something for free". I told him that I was the one that drove 30 minutes across town for what he said in his ad were an "excellent condition KEF" - which they were not. He said no to anything under $75.00. I told him good luck and left. I think Karma sat on my shoulder during our conversation. Too bad for him, too good for me.

I went to the thrift store today and the whole time i was riding up there I was willing myself to find something good...Mcintosh, Krell, Adcom, Marantz...just SOMETHING out of the ordinary. Well...it wasnt any of those.

What I DID get is a pair of JBL C36 enclosures loaded with some odd Heath 2 or three way speaker. *gasp* I havent taken the drivers out yet to see exactly what the heck they are but I will.

AND my band was just asked to play with EyeHateGod this weekend.
Its been a good day.

A real hodge podge picked up on Monday. Not pictureed is a Beomaster 1700 along with some PC gear.......I was happy to get the jack/rca pieces and also the assorted knobs (inside the reel case). Lots of older stuff, the 506 was a kit, yes an actual tube kit! Unfortunatetly the lid on the Pioneer table got smashed, still attached, but damned ugly. :D Got the whole lot for $30.

I had that same signal generator when I was a kid, along with a Heathkit O-11 'scope! They were my grandfather's...I had his Heath VTVM too. Sure wish I still had that instrument...

Nice grab! Watch the signal generator, the power transformers can be leaky. Mine was back in the late 70's/early 80's and I got bit by it a few times. :D

I had a good week but not exactly super cheap like the $5.00 Adcom stuff above.

Today I picked up these two: Yamaha DSP-A3090 Integrated home theater amp. (retailed for $2600.00 in 1999) and a Pioneer DV-09 DVD (retailed for $2,000.00 in 1999) for $90.00

http://i49.tinypic.com/dm4ft0.jpg

But, this is proabably my best score this year. Vero Research Soundwav VR-3 speakers. Perfect working condition. Sold for $1,700.00 a pair around 1995. Paid: $9.00 for the pair. These speakers sound like $1,700.00 speakers. Over 70lbs each.

Cool speakers! I'm always surprised at what people find around Chicago. It is slim pickings here in NYC, even Long Island and nearby NJ hold few thrift store gems. The best thing I saw recently was a pair of Ohm H speakers in dire need of a refoam. The price? Not for sale, the manager's keeping them.

Not much in a long time. Probably the best thing in the past year is the very nice Kenwood KA-4002 integrated amp I was lucky enough to find under a pile of clothes. It needed a bit of repair but that went well and it's now at the heart of my main music system. 24 wpc of very clean power is more than enough for my needs!

As for great camera or turntable finds, well, it's become mighty slim pickins.

I just returned from an estate sale. While I missed an AR turntable with a fine dustcover for $20, I did pick up a pair of pristine Dynaco A-25 speakers for $30. A few minor cabinet scratches that the Tibetan Almond Stick and furniture polish will cure and the grills look new. I do not believe the estate sales managers had a clue. Also got a brand new, dated 1983 - still shrink wrap sealed - LP, "The Early Early Nat King Cole Trio", mostly recorded in 1949 and 1950 "Limited Edition on Pure Vinyl". $2.00.

Got these at my local thrift today for $4.00. One tested 7.6 ohms & the other one tested open. Got it home and took the back off & a wire had come disconnected from speaker terminal. It tested 7.2 ohms. Woofer is a 12" Heathkit AS 183 & tweeter has H 208 X and 328646 on it. Crossover is simple cap. Cabs are heavy furniture, walnut with a few tiny scratches & nicks. I'm going to oil them up with some Old English for dark furniture. Grill cloth is in perfect condition. These cabs will take a 15" woof & a larger horn but have reduction faceplates installed with these speakers. Each has a down firing tube for the bass port. The right cab does have a piece of trim missing off the top at the back. There's also an attenuator on the back for the tweet. The last pic is one that I found of the AS 183 while researching it. Apparently it's a coaxial.

I can't help myself - I love auto-reversing decks! Especially if they are dual well decks with auto bias, AMS and HX-PRO noise reduction!

It’s a Sony TC-WR775 dual well auto-reverse deck with Dolby B, C and HX-PRO noise reduction with auto tape select and AMS. This makes my 2nd Sony auto-reverse dual, my 3rd HX-PRO deck and my 4th auto-reverse deck.

I have cleaned it up and checked the functions - so far so good! I've cleaned the rollers and heads/tape path and I just need to de-mag and I'll be ready to put her is service!

i'm kinda looking for a similar sony. about 2 weeks go an 'es' model (on fleabay) went for, imo, almost nothing, forget exactly how much. but cheap.

Last weekend my buddy got a set of Leak Sandwich speakers for $50. I already have a set, or I would have snagged them. Except for a tear or two in the grills, they literally looked close to new, despite being almost 50 years old. Interestingly, they have a different tweeter than my Leaks. It is the same size, which is fairly large (2"?) and made by Leak (with the metal cone), but was much more aggressive sounding.

I have to say, the Leaks I've heard have changed the way I think of two-way speakers. They are just great for how simple they are.

That same thrift store had an old set of Scott speakers (60s I'd guess), Bose that I'd never seen, and some 90s Yamaha NS bookshelves (not NS-10s). None were in great shape and the place was a bit pricey, so I passed.

So I was in the local Goodwill outlet, headed for the electronics on the back wall. Well, under one of the bins of stuff they sell by the pound, I see this LP.

http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=218919&d=1278383487

I naturally figure it's junk, but still it's an LP and I don't like it being on the floor. So I bend down and pick it up, and This Is What It Was:

http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=218920&d=1278383487

Furthermore, there were more. I ended up getting that, and four other ex-Miami-University-library LPs, all in nice shape:

Bruckner, Symphony #4
William Byrd, "Mass for Four Voices," Archiv. This was wierd in that I'd just heard this very wonderful choral piece for the first time the day before, on the radio.
Claudio Monteverdi, "Virtuose Madrigale," Archiv.
And this Columbia disk with three sonatas on it. Ones with names. By Beethoven.

The Pachelbel Canon is here done the old-fashioned way--they bow the bass theme intro, they don't pluck it, the reverb is held to natural levels, etc. Very delicate compared to the sexed-up arrangement common now. Johann Freidrich Fasch, also on this disk, is new to me. He's a contemporary of Bach, and each is known to have had manuscripts of the other's music. First rate stuff, not genius like say, the Brandenburgs, but very wonderful.

All for $2.75, at the per pound rate.

Honestly, they are the reason I joined AK.org.

I've never really had a system (but have always wanted one). I guess the bug has bit now.

Don't be afraid to buy them needing to be refoamed... its easy on these woofers.
Also, look out for more of these with really rough cabinets, pull out the drivers, and make 1 good speaker out of two. Then chuck the cabinets and the replacement woofers. In the end you'll also have original replacement tweeters incase you blow one!

a Pioneer SX-750 for free because they didn't know if it worked or not,

and finally a friend sold me his mother's old system that she was going to throw out: Pioneer SX-950, CT-F9191, B&W DM-110 speakers for a case of beer!

Lafayette, that's a name I haven't seen in many years...

Got a pair of Advent "Baby II" speakers yesterday, needing the usual refoam (it seems I buy them faster than I can refoam), all drivers work fine, $11.91 Goodwill Smyrna (near Atlanta) on South Cobb Drive.

They had some Infinity RS-3000, the cabinet looks just like this:
http://media.photobucket.com/image/RS-3000%20Infinity/ljsearles/IMG_2633.jpg
They had the covers, I took one off and was immediately confused - why does this woofer have a whizzer cone? Why is the surround so small? A moment's thought told me the story, the original woofer foams went out, and the owner replaced them with these really cheap woofers... Goodwill priced at $39...

Today I stopped by Goodwill and picked up this B&K AVP1000 Preamp for $30.00.

I had been looking for a way to power my new Snell speakers (4 ohm and like power). I have a Altec 9442a amp but needed a decent pre. This B&K will fit the bill nicely. It has direct output bypassing all AD/DA stuff. I just have to get used to listening to stuff flat without EQ. After a few hours I am liking this setup a lot. Very clean and balanced. I always have the Fisher w/ Paradigms for rump shaking bass and colorization.

Eveything in these pics except the speaker wire is from local Thrift Store. The Fisher, The Altec, the Integra DVD/CD, the Niles speaker selector, the Pradigms and the Snells... even the rack all thrift.

Well, my finds for this week are a Luxman T-117 tuner and D-117 CD player $3.00, Heathkit AR-1515 $20.00, Harman Kardon HK-3470 $10.00. Plus I bought an orphan Polk Audio S4 speaker, about a year and a half ago, and today I found a mate $2.00. http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll170/opossumcrusher/DSCN1703.jpg http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll170/opossumcrusher/DSCN1704.jpg http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll170/opossumcrusher/DSCN1706.jpg

Walking to the neighborhood coffee shop I saw an Onkyo A-5 amp set out with the trash at the curbside. I took it home and saw that the left channel fuse had blown. New fuse cost $0.70.

Checked Craigslist to look for a tuner and found a perfect match Onkyo T-9 for $25.

Went to a GoodWill Grand Opening yesterday. The line was almost 2 blocks long to get in when they opened at 9 am but moved quickly when the doors opened. At the door everyone received a $5 GW Gift card. They were serving Dunkin' Donuts & coffee & soda etc. FREE and the place was fully stocked. I picked up the LP's shown in mint condition in plastic outer sleeves .99 each and found the Coltrane picture in a black metal professional quality frame for $9.99 and used the $5 gift card towards the purchase. You can't beat those GW's! :thmbsp:

I just bought an AKAI AS-980 quad reciever for $10 @ GW. It's a little rough looking but it's huge, so I had to get it! I'm not even sure if the outputs are all good, almost all the faceplate markings for the switches and knobs are missing or screwed up somehow. I'm going to have to find some close up pictures of one of these so I can figure out the controls. I'm happy I bought it though :thmbsp:.

Some of you guys are hardcore collectors, professional hobbyist I think is the correct term.

Yesterday at the Ann Arbor Recycle Shop:

Cambridge Audio receiver Model 2500, 25 watts ($15.00).

Infinity SM 82's ported 2-way foam rot speakers ( $10.00).

Last summer a Lafayette LT-825, solid state tuner, made between 1977-81 for $5.00 at U of M's disposition center. This is a great little tuner, snatch one up if you ever see one.

That's a great CDP, looks a lot like the one I have at home. I love it, had mine since new and it never gave me any trouble.

I'm cheating here- the amp is not a Thrift find but I bought it new via our local version of CL. It cost EUR 60 and is a Chinese product, Class D. The Bose speakers are a temporary measure and cost EUR 20 @ Thrift, the JVC media player cost EUR 8. I'm no Bose fan but this sounds pretty good for now.

Well worth it given performance and the usual going price (minimally twice as much over here, and I guess there are more available in Europe than in the USA).

Picked up these 609 MKII's for 7.5 Euro's at a flea market about a month ago... Gotta love Tannoys (at least the dualconcentric designs :) )

After a long dry spell, I went to Asbury Thrift Thursday. Walked into the electronics room & looked around, nothing. As I was walking out, I spied something on the far end of a table that made my eyes light up. A Sansui XP-99 TT. The platter was askew, but luckily the Stylus was not broke. It had an AT AT-3100 MC cart on it.. The Piano Gloss Black body was in excellent condition, just a little dusty. The dust cover was scratched up & had a weird sticker on the front. Grabbed it and few records & headed for the register. $7.00 lighter and out the door. Got it home & found it had a few issues. I took care of them, check link, http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=313379 . Got it playing last night. Great sound & this is the first MC cart I have owned, There is some difference compared to a MM cart.. But I think I'll keep this one for awhile.

It was my birthday this week, I was itching to go thrift store shopping to see what I could find. I had pics of dead presidents in my pocket and were prepared to exchange them for the goods.

I went to a few stores, got a couple LP's but then there was one thrift...

It's got lots of TV's and stuff just lying around, and from kind of talking to the guy, he had three boxes of stuff, computer keyboards and cables and game consoles and whatnot, they can barely sort through their donations as fast as they can get them. I saw a Garrard Lab 80 with the wooden tonearm with a $20 price on it though that may have been a previous yardsale price. I was a little interested, it's a historic and interesting device, but ... there was a 200-CD changer in the middle of one pile... I saw a stack of about a dozen components, one was a receiver, and on the bottom was a Pioneer integrated amp - it look fairly big and beefy, it's got the two "fake" sections, the bottom large part is volume control and input selector, the smaller section above is a graphic equalizer. They were busy unloading glass nicknacks from a cabinet they had just sold, but when they were done I finally asked the guy about it. He pulled it out to plug in, but he said they didn't have enough time to plug in speakers and a tuner or whatever else to make it play. But it lit up, and selecting different inputs made the respecive lights light up. I asked how much, he said the woman does all the pricing. Her price was one dead president. And she added "for all of it."

So what I got was, firstly the item I was looking at:
Pioneer SA-1510 fairly late-model integrated amp - both "phono" and "CD" inputs listed, looked it up online, about 120wpc.

The other stuff that was in the stack and came along for the ride:
Sony STR-DE345 Surround A/C control center/amp (100WPC, 5 channels)
Pioneer PD-M410 CD player with the 6-CD cartridge thing.
Pioneer TC-121-X tuner, it's got a ribbon cable only connection, I haven't looked closely enough to see if it plugs into the integrated amp, but it clearly is meant to only be sold with specific model Pioneer preamps/integrated amps.
yamakawa DVD player dvd-265

So I paid and a couple of volunteers were helping me take it to the car, and I mentioned a turntable I saw - no, not the Garrard, it's a Sansui SR-2050C with apparently the original Sansui cart. We asked the woman how much for that, and she said "Oh, that's been in here a long time, you can have it for free." There was also a Sansui receiver apparently from the same era (mid 70's or so) but I wasn't interested enough to ask.

Well, today I picked up two interesting cassette recorders for five dollars each at Re-PC in Seattle - a BIC T-1 (which records in two speeds) and an Aiwa AD-1250. They were sold untested, "as-is". Got them home and discovered the transports on both were not working. Hit a speed and the deck tries and then shuts off. But they both have lighted VU meters and are putting out sound. So, I guess they both need new belts. Not being a do-it-yourself-er, I don't know how much it would cost to have a tech replace the belts and get these two up-and-running.
