Where would I get one like that?
bear-hifi 05-08-2006, 09:59 PM There are lots of places on the net where you could find a arm... The bay or Audiogon is a good place for used.
You may find more info here http://www.vinylengine.com/
or here http://audiotools.com/oldarm.html
You got the needledoctor however thier stuff cost alot...

Thats a really good find for 5 bucks!!! Nice table and I think it would be worth paying for a nice arm like a Rega...
HomerJSimpson 05-08-2006, 10:11 PM Do I have to replace the whole tonearm? Or can I just replace the broken piece. Seems like a waste of a good set up!!!!

I don’t think you can however I have never replaced just an arm before... The whole assembly being together is very important I would think. I would say unless you find the same arm you should not try it… But I could be wrong…
bear-hifi 05-08-2006, 10:22 PM bully has a Sumiko Premier tone arm tonearm for sale here on AK... Maybe that would work?
Mr. Snoid 05-08-2006, 11:04 PM Homer...good on you on the Micro...we now have at least two in the Carolinas...from what I have read the SME would be as close to a replacement arm as you will find.
I have the 44DD and it has been a great table...although I have found it very difficult to find much information on the brand and I would think when it craps out its a goner, but so far it has held up very well...5 smackers I'd say you did well regardless. Now if we can get Cableguy out of the Denon camp and find him a Micro we would have a quarum...I would love to find a 55D...a
HomerJSimpson 05-08-2006, 11:19 PM Thanx Alot, I really love! I can't wait to get it her up and running! I just don't have that kinda $$$ Right now! :smoke:
We'll get Cableguy one soon enough!!! I think I'll go back to that thrift tommorow and see what else I can find!!! They did have a single BIC Venturi in nice condition!
Dynacophil 05-09-2006, 08:08 AM Hi
here you may find info about your Arm...
http://my-micro.de/micro_produkte_ton.htm
but i guess you won't get parts for yours.
The used Arm is a dynamically balanced Tonearm..

macaltec 05-09-2006, 01:01 PM It's crap throw it out :D .There is a place in Cary on Kildaire Farm road (I think) that sells Rega TT's. You may be able to get some info out of them on an arm to replace yours.
wualta 05-10-2006, 12:22 AM Call me a ramblin' fool, but for a few bucks I'd get me some JB Weld and try to jam that sucker back in there. What would I have to lose?

That is actually one of my options. :scratch2: Cableguy says he has a parts unit I can use and see if we can use that part off of his. If not, Hell with it, I'll glue it! In the best way possible, without adding too much weight to it! :thmbsp:
Nice to know others think the same way I do! :D
cableguy 05-10-2006, 01:44 PM Duct tape that sucker and rock & roll :D

I know you were kidding, but it reminds me of an idea I've always wanted to try: connect the arm piping to the pivot using an elastomer bushing, kind of like the suspension on a car. It would terminate any nasty vibrations induced in the arm tube and keep 'em from reflecting back to the headshell (which has a little rubber washer to aid in the same cause).
Obviously a bit more involved than just jammin' it in there, but...
Strawman 05-10-2006, 04:41 PM Pretty table! If you're going to try a repair, is there room to apply the the epoxy and kind of use a tube to keep everything in allignment while it cure? I got a Pioneer PL-990 cheap and the arm was broken in 2 like that. Thats what I did, then cut the tube off after it had set up for a couple of days and filed whatever squished out. I was sloppy as it's a crappy table anyway. Shouldn't change the mass or tracking if you're very careful. Check continuity on the wiring first, or you're wasting your time. Good luck.
HomerJSimpson 05-10-2006, 09:11 PM Strawman, I was thinking of doing something like that! Do you have any pics or tips? I love this unit! I think it should be an easy fix! Any advice????

I saw that one on the bay, passed it up because of the broken arm.
John...
There must be something you can replace that one with? :thmbsp:

Bring it with you to Bills friday if you can. I'll be able to tell you if it can be welded or not. If it's not cast or powdered metal I can piece it back together. This method will involve a complete disassembly though. The worst thing that can happen is that it will still be broke :D .
tentoze 05-10-2006, 10:19 PM Find some sort of compatible replacement arm. That one will NEVER be whole and fully functional.

I agree, but it won't hurt to try. Cableguy has a parts unit. I'll see if it'll fit! if it does, will length of the arm matter, and the shape? I hope not, as finding an OEM will be impossible :sigh:
Also here are some pics of the broken pieces. I was able to get everything apart tonight!
Mr. Snoid 05-11-2006, 05:34 AM oh those pictures are ugly....hope Bill's got a donor arm....i dunno about the epoxy fix on those parts but who knows...good luck with your patient!
Strawman 05-11-2006, 06:44 AM That doesn't look like a very clean break. Do the surfaces mate at all?

Yeah they match up pretty good. Not perfect, but good.
tentoze 05-11-2006, 09:59 AM Returning that tone arm to any kind of useable condition would be the equivalent of turning a pound of hamburger into a herd of Black Angus cattle.
Trower 05-11-2006, 02:14 PM Returning that tone arm to any kind of useable condition would be the equivalent of turning a pound of hamburger into a herd of Black Angus cattle.
Agreed, Its not a clean break and it looks like there was quite a bit bending......so you may be able to get it back together but it may not track well seing as how hard of a hit it took! I do hope that it all turns out well for ya though! Nick
macaltec 05-11-2006, 10:17 PM Homer,
See if you can find any mfg dimensions on that arm. We can cut it on both sides of the bent/broken area and splice it back together with a piece to maintain the correct dimensions. Or rplace it al together from the forward most broken part back. May take some time and a bit of doing. I can't speak to the proper function of it when its done but we should be able to get it close. It's just a piece of metal.

I noticed that table that was on ebay had a Seattle address and HomerJSimpson is in Raleigh. I was also watching that table on ebay and I believe it didn't meet the reserve at the final $36 bid.
Even more of a coincidence is that I was in that thrift store in Raleigh on 5/3/06 about 10 minutes after someone brought in that Micro turntable that HomerJSimpson bought. I was sure it was the same ebay table too. The broken arm is lying in the same spot as that ebay table.
I passed on it even though it was only a fiver. I plugged it in and all and then stood at the register while the clerk waited for me to sort myself out. I really didn't want another repair project and was leaning towards a new table anyway (I just got a Rega P2 with glass platter yesterday :music: ).
I'm glad it found a good home :) I was looking at it trying to suss out how to rig another tonearm on there and honestly couldn't.
Then today I found this picture posted from lorne with a clever mounting of a rega rb300 arm on a Micro. Very inspiring! :thmbsp: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showpost.php?p=525034&postcount=14

Homer,
I am no expert but is the "S" tonearm shape the same on most or all TT's?
I am thinking you can find another TT and just change the tube? That one is really nice looking by the way other than the arm.
And I surfed a bit on the net and that seems to be a similar problem with that model, cracked arms. :scratch2: I have a pioneer that is for parts on my other pioneer, PL-10 I think? Let me know if you can use that arm?
Saw this arm on ebay:

Check it out.
John. :music:
Strawman 05-14-2006, 02:35 PM I hope your "watching" that Homer. I don't need it, but for $10.00 I'm thinking about it. Putting it in my watch file.
Beobloke 05-15-2006, 04:20 AM I know you were kidding, but it reminds me of an idea I've always wanted to try: connect the arm piping to the pivot using an elastomer bushing, kind of like the suspension on a car. Strathearn tried this on their STM4 turntable back in the late 70's - they connected the headshell to the arm with a flexible rubber bushing.
HIDEOUS IDEA!! - ruined the bass from the turntable and made VTA a somewhat hit-and-miss affair which varied according to cartridge weight as well as size.
IMHO this ruined what was otherwise a nice deck with an ingenious and effective drive system and i really wouldn't bother.............
Stanton681EEES 05-15-2006, 05:49 AM Here's my idea try the epoxy glueing method as others have suggested, then cover the arm with heatshrink tubing I hear it's a nice tweak anyway and would cover up glue joints ya never know it might turn out to be nice sounding arm that has better damping.
Just a thought if your not into the replacement thing.
wualta 05-15-2006, 11:05 AM Strathearn ... connected the headshell to the arm with a flexible rubber bushing.
Heh heh, no, I don't think I'd put the bushing there.

[tongue in cheek]So, tell me straight-- you have some objections to the idea, is that right? [/tongue in cheek]
