If you can you should p/u the new RS as it's their thousandsth issue anniversary and it is quite good with a great 3d cover ala Beggars Banquet and great articles about musicians they interviewed.

While I didn't get the 1st few copies as a kid, I did start reading RS in the summer of 68 w/Townsend on the cover. I'm POed that my parents threw out all my copies as it would be great eBay material and I would have more $$ for tunes.

I learned about the Floyd through an interview /Clapton in 68 or so, and bought many records I read reviews about.

You mean the 3D cover a la the Rolling Stones' "Satanic Majesties Request" LP. The original Rolling Stone newspaper was a great publication in the first few years of it's existence. It was the only place you could read about what was really happening in the "eyes of youth" at that time. I was a subscriber in the late 60s, and still have a lot of the issues. Great to read them to remind me of what it was really like in those rebellious times. But one thing RS sucked at was record reviews. They got a lot of them wrong. They panned many a great RnR album. Supposedly Eric Clapton was devastated by a critique regarding a Cream review, and helped in his decision to leave the group.

with you guys. At one point in the late 60s, there were only 2 places selling RS in mid-NC - at least that I was aware of. I'd read them until they were tattered around the edges and passed them around all my band members.

The 1K issue arrived the other day - funny, I don't even remember subscribing to it. Anyway, I did have some deja vu as I thumbed through the articles with the old RS covers. I do remember the early days when RS defined for us folks who lived the backwoods what "is hip". These days, there's little in there that is interesting for me.

Cheers,

David

Welllll, some things never change. I dislike many of the records they rave about. I bought King of Leon after their rave reviews and after a listen or 2 came to the conclusion that they were just another band with an average sound.

Cancelled my subscription in the mid 70's when they put Donny Osmond on the cover. :smoke: Lost all credibility as far as I was concerned.
