View Full Version : HT for music and movies. thoughts?
I currently only have room for one setup. therefore I am using my HT pre-amp/ amp combo for all formats (2 channel, sacd, movies, etc) I have added a turntable and a dedicated phono amp as my HT pre-amp does not have a phono stage. my only concern it the signal from the turntable has to go through 3 pieces of gear (turntable - phono amp- ht preamp- amp) before it reaches the speakers. How much if at all does this degrade the sound with the phono signal passing through so many stages?

If you like the sound of your home theater for stereo listening usage then go with it. It sounds like all you really needed to do was add a dedicated "stand alone" phono stage. It is really no different than folks with separate amps, and a line level preamplifier who then get into vinyl and add a stand alone phono stage to their line stage only stereo preamplifier. It should really not degrade the sound if the cable runs are not from across the room from the turntable to the phono stage. Let your own ears be the deciding factor in whether or not you like the sound. That is all that matters really in the end.
I am in a similar but slightly different quandry. I am setting up my first home theater 5.1 set up. My main dedicated stereo for music only listening using my 45 mono blocks and 300b mono amps are in another smaller room. I am trying to figure the best way to hook up my Fosgate vacuum tube Prologic processor/preamp that does 7.1, or 5.1. I am for now only going to use the 5.1. I will actually be using only 6 channels of my new amplifier since I can bypass the plate amp in my subwoofer and plug it directly into my new amp. My room is not really big enough for 8 "big" speakers. I have not heard a small home theater speaker set up that sounded "right" to me so I cobbled my own full size rear channel and 2 bigger front home theater/stereo "horn" speakers together. I have a temporary front center channel until I buy the new JBL one out now. It matches the impedence of my 93dB efficient L300 front speakers nicely. I was mainly a die hard vacuum tube amplifier and preamplifier user for years. That just changed now as I just scrounged a 8 channel ADA PTM-8150 solid state amplifier for my on-going home theater project. This will hold me over until I can afford the sand and triode vacuum tube tube Butler Audio model 5150 5.1 channel amplifier by late this year. In that room I could run one of my turntables through my Fosgate FAP-V1 surround processor and 2 front channel speaker preamplifier combo by just flipping a switch to 2 channel only stereo output. I would just like you only need to buy a dedicated stand alone phono stage. Good luck and I hope you figure out the best sounding phono stage to go with your preamplifier. There are a few DIY dedicated stand alone phono stage vacuum tube kits that are not very expensive but are reviewed as very good sounding. One of those might be fun to build just as long as you can solder. John
