First LP? It was called something like "Best of the big bands volume 1" it was all big band/swing type stuff...I was 8 or 9 years old.
Tape? Well, when I was 5 years old my grandpa gave me a Frank Yankovic tape, but the first tape (cassette's what we're talking about, right?) I ever remember purchasing was "John Cougar Melloncamp: Scarecrow" played it like crazy....dropped it in the lake, fished it out, let it dry (somewhat) and played it some more! wore it out hehehe Interestingly, now I have it on LP and have never owned it on CD
First CD? Waynes World: The soundtrack...bought it in 1994.
Never owned an 8 track....Oh, I did have a bunch of "kids records" 33's & 45's when I was really little...couldn't tell you what they where though....but that doesn't really count in what we're discussing here :nono:

That is quite a list. Are the Rockappellas the same group that was called The Nylons? (They had an album called Rockappella)
bentpencil 07-31-2006, 09:04 PM That is quite a list. Are the Rockappellas the same group that was called The Nylons? (They had an album called Rockappella)
Not the same. The Rockapellas were strictly an acapella group, as were all on the CD. I first heard them in the late 80s or early 90s, but the group has changed members and don't sound the same to me. See if you can find their "Zombie Jamboree". They do a great job.
Grainger49 07-31-2006, 09:14 PM Not the same. The Rockapellas were strictly an acapella group, as were all on the CD. I first heard them in the late 80s or early 90s, but the group has changed members and don't sound the same to me. See if you can find their "Zombie Jamboree". They do a great job.
The Nylons were acapella also. Well, there was a drum machine on some tracks.
bentpencil 07-31-2006, 09:22 PM Don't know. Both groups have websites.
Grainger49 08-01-2006, 10:01 AM Now that is telling. I guess there are just similarities!
Dusty Chalk 08-01-2006, 03:37 PM Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon -- record
Mike Oldfield, Tubular Bells -- CD
Grainger49 02-08-2007, 03:32 PM I see no activity since August. The moderator could lock the thread. It isn't gathering any more interest.
Tubejunke 02-08-2007, 10:36 PM Maybe because its a kind of hard thing to remember. I've spent the last 15 minutes trying to come up with answers. The thread seems to have morphed into a list of ALL of your first buys as far as format. Album, Tape, CD, whatnot.
I can remember running out to the RECORD store to buy an Eric Clapton-"Slowhand" LP.
My first Cassette may have been The Jimi Hendrix Experience-"Smash Hits"
My first CD was back when most of a music store's stock was in LP and Cassette form. I think I found Ten Years After's self titled first release. Either that or Led Zeppelin's first album. I wanted to hear the rock greats in this new and supposedly great sounding form.
Now I listen to the LP versions.......
Grainger49 02-09-2007, 09:25 AM You're right. When I started this thread, I listed my first 45 and LP. Then added the rest as others started posting their first of everything. But first is first, not what you bought when changing formats.
Look back, you will see what I bought, when current, as my first two black vinyl musics.
john_w 02-09-2007, 01:29 PM I suppose if most people listed them in chronological order (which is what I did - I think), we're seeing both "first" and "first of format". It's also interesting to see who bought vinyl first...or 8 Track...or CD...or Victrola, and how their media choices progressed. Of course, the youngest members will start with CD or maybe even MP3, then "progress backwards" into the older formats.
Ocupatto 02-09-2007, 01:42 PM The first CD that I purchased for my DIY Altec Valencias was Billy Joel's Live New York 2 disc set.
I since sold the DIY Altec Valencias, because I found a pair of 846U Altec Valencias.
;)
Since then, I have accumulated over 120 cds and 150 Lps. I can't stop!
When I purchase a cd or lp, I ask myself - how will they sound on my speakers? If I have to think about it, I usually buy it.
Funny though, I purge my CDs and I still have that many. I rotate every so often. I feel bad for the ones I hardly listen to.
-Storm.
