I,m thinking of replacing my H/K 17s preamp, and wondered if anyone had ideas about a good match with my MC-2100. The C-22 has been suggested, but I wondered about the other models. Two in college makes investment cost right now an issue. Differences in sound between 24,26,27,28,29,31,32? Or should I just hang in there with the 17s and start saving? Help!!!!!

Hi e,
I started with a 2105 (which I believe is a 2100 but w/ meters) and a C26 (still use both as well as a 28) and love them. The volume control in the 26 gets dirty but I just turn off the amp and turn the C26 vol control max-on and off 4-5 times and it sounds clean again. After 30 years it could probably use a trip to Terry for a freshening up but still sounds great as is.
Good Luck,
George

I would go tube on the pre all the way.(I did :))
But depending on finances I would go with a MX110 which cannot be touched for McDollar spent or the C2200 if budget allows.
Remote controls rock!!! :smoke:

Tube preamps are great, and if funds allow the new C220 (seems like I've seen a price of $3300) would be a great choice. Among less expensive options, I'd probably go solid state as I refuse to live without remote control and less expensive tube options don't offer remote. The C35 and C37 offer good sound and remote at reasonable prices (I think $800 to $1000 is typical on Audiogon)

Anyone have experiance with the C 712? A 2 channel with remote, but in a lower profile size. I've been told $1500 new. The search continues, but I thought I might try a C 28 to get started, then look for a tube version C 22, C-22, C 220 or MX 110 later. I should be able to get my money back out of the C-28. Opinions?

I have a C27, great basic preamp. Better volume control than the earlier C26 and C28. They sell for $350-450.

If you get a C33 you'll the s/n ratio hit 100db :thmbsp:

But watch out for hissing variable loudness controls, especially with horns. :thumbsdn:

I'm looking at a pristine C-28 with the wooden case. The only issue is the red lights on the input switch don't work. Is this a big issue or not. As nice as it is I still want to make sure that I'm not buying a big problem. I'm supposed to pick it up Sunday, so a fast response would be appreciated.
Thanks!
