I've been meaning to rewire (internally) a set of speakers (Tangent RS6's) all winter. It's spring.... and I still have to get to it!

The original wire was pretty crappy and I've replaced it. But now I want to get a 'brand name' or some quality stuff in there to further improve the sound. People who have heard my little Tangents with the Audax drivers will know what I mean....

What to get?

Speaker cable goes from the amp to the speaker. Why not try speaker cable for internal hookup wire, sez I? So I've tried van den hul speaker cable (but I think the silver coated copper could make it too shrill), a no-name brand (pure copper but probably made for electrical purposes). What else is there?

What I really want is Cardas hookup wire. But it's really, really expensive - if it was $10.00 a foot I'd probably go for it but.... :tears:

Anyone have any ideas?

I think pure copper - audio grade - would be interesting. Anyone know where I can get some? Or get some dedicated internal hook up wire?

You can get almost anything you want (including Cardas hookup wire) from Michael Percy: http://www.percyaudio.com/Catalog.pdf

Gary, a great option is to go down to Active Surplus on Queen, east of Spadina. They usually have all kinds of interesting wire there for cheap. I bought some very pure silver wire some years ago for just over a buck a foot. Hard and tough to work with, but ok inside a speaker. They sometimes come up with all manner of weird stuff down there. Always worth a look!

Ahh, yes, look for the gorilla! :D

They moved a little closer to Yonge St last year - but did not go too far.

Good idea!

Welborne Labs sells a few different brands of hook up wire, http://www.welbornelabs.com/parts.htm

The Cardas wire is great stuff, but it's damn near impossible to solder unless you use a solder pot or order it pre-tinned.

I heard about the soldering 'tinning' problem. Thanks for the link!!
