Gordzilla 05-29-2006, 04:48 PM hey-
i got a pair of Cerwin-Vega speakers.
They are D-5 Digital Series...
in really good shape, maybe a couple scrathces on the top of the cabinets... the numbers are #430426/#430460.
i am thinking of putting these on Craig's list- Los Angeles.
what is a good asking price for them?
thanks for your help.

thedelihaus 05-29-2006, 06:08 PM Gordzilla, unfortunately these don't command the prices one would think, although the model is a good one. seems the smaller D-3 and the D-7 do better, as well as the love it or hate it D-9.
Your nice JBLs have a great resale value, but since you just got those, I doubt you'd be looking to sell them. Since Cerwin Vegas are usually associated with "party" speakers, and not audiophile speakers, they don't always sell well. This is unfortunate, because I find the "D" line like these, as well as the "AT" line, and the rare "HED" line, all to sound great, and I think are good enough to be called audiophile quality. These, as well as the very early Cerwin Vegas, that used interesting driver arrangements and sometimes multiple boxes per "speaker" (a box for the woofer and another for the midrange and driver pair) are also a very good speaker.
Those D-5s should be great for rock. Think a lesser JBL or HPM, closer to what a Mach 1 or 2 are like, of course, as a D-5, a lot smaller in the pecking order line.
Locally the "D" series and the "AT" series have been selling for $30 to $75 here in Boston. The HED series up to $200. A poor guy has his very nice D-3s up and can't sell them for the $75 he was asking originally, or the $50 he lowered the price to.
Ask $75 and take as low as $30, is my advice. Worth more than that, but that's all you'll get, most likely. Sorry.
I've thought of picking up those D-3s locally, as they seem to be voiced just right, and better sounding than the less-popular D-5s, but have resisted. I imagine the D-5s are a bit heavier in the bass and slightly upsetting the balance found with the D-3s.
If you have a workshop, or a good friend looking to cut his teeth on vintage, they may also be worth keeping.
With any luck, they'll go up in value some time down the line. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be any time soon.

I couldn't get $10 for my HED's. :D They'll stay in the office system when I vacate the office...
birddog 05-29-2006, 06:27 PM CV-3000's?? BTM, if the shipping would not have killed me , I'd have given you $10...
Gordzilla 05-30-2006, 12:08 AM yeah, i figure that they are pretty much around 50 bucks or less...
that's what's happening on ebay.
i paid NOTHING for them and they contributed to many nights of mind-shearing with too much beer and lots of scratched up punk rock albums.
they served their purpose and did their duty...
i'll just move them into storage until a friend mentions a need for some speakers and let them have 'em for free...
that's the neighborly thing to do and just how i got them in the first place.
man they were bass heavy.
these JBL 4300's are blowing me away right now.
Spacemen 3 sound pretty good at the moment.
i am sure SUPER BEE his holding his face in his hands right now...

I am SO f*cking happy for you my friend. It has only taken me 16 years to help you find your way outta the dark ages but since you got Mcintosh and JBL you have taken to it like a duck to water, Or an OKIE to beer.
My next prediction for my good friend Gordzilla...........Mcintosh tube gear!
hakka26 05-30-2006, 12:59 AM Saw some D-1's at an estate sale for $5. Weren't exactly flying out the door. I would've gone back the next day but forgot.
cicero2 06-02-2006, 10:57 PM hey, godzilla

abpeep 06-02-2006, 11:16 PM I've been watching our favorite auction site for prices on D series speakers. There have been two pair of D-5 go recently for $90 and $139.

Gordzilla 06-03-2006, 03:24 AM hey c!
i don't know much about the CV's... i do know that mine served well. i had the police called to my "pad" several times, made the the hated one in the neighborhood, etc...
yeah, spacemen 3, gods of that easy dope sound.
i miss 'em. spiritualized isn't quite the same thing.
i don't know what the good people around here are into, i am pretty all over the place... i dig the old sounds of the 1900-1930's (pre-war gospel, hillbilly, race, all of that stuff...) and the sounds of woody guthire i regard to be holy. really like the kings of 50's rock & roll, the 60's r&b scene, garage and psych 60's - mostly european and texan bands, 70's and 80's punk, country from the 20's through the mid 70's, most old jazz, and noise. lots of noise, the japanese and german noise was good... i just dig music.
nice to "meet" ya.
i am looking to part with there speakers, come get 'em...
;)

cicero2 06-03-2006, 04:07 AM Gordzilla,
yeah, i'm all over the place, too. did the red krayola play LA? i meant to go to the show here, but did not. i've been into 50's/60's R&R and soul lately. i saw spiritualized live 7 yrs ago and it was one of the best shows ever. hardly ever listen to the records, though. haven't listened to noise lately(maybe i'll test my new speakers w/ some merzbow, aube, or pan_sonic), but i'm excited about the nurse w/ wound show in 2 weeks.
have you heard simon finn's 'pass the distance'? great psych-folk from 1970
where in LA do you live? i've not really been to LA, but sometimes sf weather makes me want to move there.
do you have trouble with some lower-fi recordings sounding limited on your hi-fi?
Gordzilla 06-03-2006, 10:14 AM i am in the silverlake area...
been in this "hipster crash pad" for 11 years and i ain't movin!
i missed the last red krayola show, but saw them a few times through the years at spaceland.
"nurse with wound", indeed! indeed!
i haven't really had any trouble with the lo-fi music not "performing" with my hi-fi gear. i just figure if you find it a bit "limiting" that the solution would be to crank it up to 11 and get a good chair.
i will put on some mummies or supercharger today and do a test.
nice to meet a fellow traveler.
