My 13yr old son is a little headbanger like his dad and the kid's all time favorite band is Metallica, so I had him do a boatload of chores around the house today and told him I would get him a surprise if he did a good job. Of course his surprise was the new Metallica CD "St. Anger" I went to Best Buy expecting to pay $16.99 to $18.99 for it but low and behold it was only $11.99 and it was on sale for $9.99!!! This includes a free DVD showing them performing and recording every song and it is in Digital 5.1 I have read many reviews from folks saying they actually liked the DVD better than the CD, and it was free! What a bargain!

Geez Thor that was awfully nice of you! I hope your son really enjoys it. I'd prefer to watch the DVD as well. Unfortunately Metallica has been spewing out crap since The Black Album.

Thanks Thor, I was going to go to tower and get it later tonight but now I'll be going to BB. A "freebie" from my homeboys?- Rare!
Master of Puppets is my favorite album so far, but Fade to Black is my favorite cut.

I have only listened to the title track but that one song has a distinctive "before the black alblum" sound. I for one love the black alblum and assorted songs like "Fuel" and "whiskey in the jar" off of the alblums after.

Hey Thor

How does your copy sound ? To me this sounds like they recorded it in a bathroom somewhere. The sound quality is not good. I`m getting alot of "ssssss" I can see where some of that is part of their new sound, but this cd sounds really crappy on all my systems.

I do like most of the songs I listened to. And I for one like the fact that they are changing it up a bit, adds a bit of minty freshness to their sound ;) And if you listen close to James guitar work on this one, you can see why he is considered one of the best rythm guitar players of all time.

The lyrics are kinda clunky....the dvd is cool...er.....need a few more listens but so far I like it.

Well I only played it once on the big system, and my pre amp is down so the Denon is handling pre amp duties, so I chalked up the "garage" sound to the Denon, mebbe thats why it sounded so pre black alblum, I get a sense from the song and from who they are touring with that perhaps they are trying to get back to their "roots"? Mebbe that's why it sounds so gritty? I keep reading how many folks actually prefers the DVD to the CD could this be why? One of the reasons I (and many others) like the Black Alblum so much was that it was Metallica BUT with a polished sound, I prefer the polished sound to just loud and gritty.

Yes they have Mike! After Cliff Burton died, they died. The Unforgiven might actually be THE WORST song of all time. :puke: However, Kill Em' All is a masterpiece.

I just listened and watched the song "Dirty Window" on the DVD and it rocks! For 40 yr old guys to still be jamming this hard is amazing. All you "Black alblum and and after" haters need to listen to this CD it will make you happy, they have definetely gone back to their roots with a marathon jamming garage band sound.

I agree this album is much more gritty then the last three, hell, really all their previous stuff. But I would`nt call it a throw back. This is pretty fresh stuff. Its hard for me to care much any more, but this is ( after many listens with headphones ) probably and IMO, Metallicas best effort to date. Again my only real complaint is I still find the lyrics a bit clunky. This cd is growing on me like a stinky fungus, and I love it !!

Thor, I much prefer raw and gritty to spit and polished. Call it an emotional thing
