I picked up an A-1040 integrated harman kardon integrated amp. It's in great condition, just a bit dusty. it has what appears to be all of it's original tubes and they all light up. I'm completely new to tube equipment, this is my first piece. I hooked up yesterday, using a tuner as a source and I had to crank it all the way up to get an sound from the speaker. today I cleaned some of the controls and the volume has increased somewhat. I'm going to keep cleaning and see if that helps. I just wonder if there's anything else I should be looking for? also, does anyone have a manual for this amp? there's a ton of settings on it and I'm not sure what is what.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a similar issue with an h/k receiver. Its probable that this hadnt been powered up for 20+ years. Brought up on a variac as recommended, switches, pots and connections cleaned. Clean, clear, evenly lit tubes( as yet untested). Volume is very low and I'm wondering where to start. I'll pass on anything I gleen and post pics if I find my camera.

Did you guys read the manual???
It says that there is supposed to be a jumper connected between the speaker A and speaker B terminals if only ONE speaker is used. If the jumper is missing- the set won't work.
If that does not solve the problem...then we can look elsewhere..but I will bet a beer that the jumpers on your units were misplaced around 1966.

Are you saying a jumper between A and B, for each channel? If so, I can't wait till tomorrow to check it out!

Well..in your case I am not 100% sure...the original posting was about the A-1040 amp. I realized after I responded, that you had a different unit.
Go to www.harmankardon.com. They have quite a few manuals to download, and you can see if something is amiss with your setup.

Ah yes, the obscure, previously unheard of XAM mark VI (hk F3). Only channels a and b, no provisions for 2 sets of speakers, only speaker options are 8 and 16 ohm. Layout and aesthetics look similar to award series. Two toned brushed aluminum faceplate.
The only other example I've seen was a foreign version listed for sale on the web, named (I think) the hk FA 3XP. Not all text translated but I remember "award series" in the description. XP = export? Anyone know where I can view pics of vintage harman kardon stuff?
thanks much
