The MX series. Discontinued.

I'll check my old source and see if they have any NOS.

I would guess with the decline of popularity with cassettes it just became to darn expensive to make.
Thats why they are like gold on the bay. Expensive little fellows if you can find them.

I've been rather depressed that all the manufactures just stopped making Metal Tapes. I haven't heard anything good about some of the Type II chrome tapes either, as many people have complained that TDK and Maxell have cheapend their tapes lately. Also I'm not all that wild about buying used tapes off of ebay. I'd rather have new media in hand.

Because of this, I've been sending emails to various manufactures asking why they stopped and if they would considering making Metal Tapes. Of particular interest is RMG International and Quantegy. I'd think if these two companies still specialize in one of the old tape formats(R2R) around that they could be ideal candidates to manufacture metal cassette tapes. Maybe we should all start sending emails to these guys to stir some interests and get some marketing departments thinking.

I think one reason the metal tapes got discontinued is the type II tapes got better and less expensive, so no one wants to put money into metal tapes. I never did get any noticeably better results with metal and I have an excellent deck; Denon DR-M44HX. As for TDK and Maxell's new tapes, the tape itself seems to be ok, it's the shell that seems cheaper.
