On one of those DIY links, a guy named Nick (in the UK) has made a couple of pairs of speakers using thin sheets of plywood and foamboard. Very light, but very stiff.
Sounds intriguing. How about a sandwich of foamboard inside sheets of 1/4-in plywood? I was thinking of using that technique for woofer enclosures. Just because I have some 1/4-in plywood, and some one-by and some foamboard. Separate enclosure for the mid & tweet would be typical, and be 'phase aligned' on top of the woofer box.
I've got lots of woofers, and need to think of something to do with 'em. Especially the pair of HPM-100 woofers (absolutely phenomenal construction), and the pair of Wharfedale 12-inchers (also castframes, very nicely done).
Oh, I would use MDF for the baffle, and a layer of nice thin veneer plywood. But still ...
Ideas?

Here's a link to the page the guy describes a couple of his speaker-building projects

They make walls for houses and buildings out of plywood/foamboard sandwhich, very strong stuff.

Yeah. This Nick fellow sez he got the idea from reading some articles by somebody (ah, CRS, check that link page I posted above).
The idea is to have a light, but very stiff & inert, enclosure. The sandwich is my idea, but I won't try to patent it :D
well, it's an idea, I've got drivers that really should be put into use, they're just too nice not to be using.

mids & tweets, too

There were some speakers made out of styrofoam back when. I can't remember what kind of covering they had but the actual structure was 100% molded/cast polystyrene. Yea, it should work.

Thatch, saw your comment and your note here to Thor. Bubblewrap? Whatta neat idea.
I had been thinking of using some Focal dome mids and tweets for the top end of my in the thought process project.
But I do have a pair of the round EMIT-B tweets, and all this talk here lately about planars & ribbons, well, yeah they ARE such a sweet sound
Got the new partsexpress flyer yesterday, they've got some BG ribbon panels on sale, and they have RAVEN now, too!!
They've also got a sale on their subwoofer plate amps/dividers, too.

Pete,
The bubble wrap is really a great and cheap way to line speakers. I built some TLs and lined the whole thing wth bubble wrap. I did stuff the line too because it is standard practice and the tube was a bit short for the 30Hz the woofers would do. I am thinking about taking the stuffing out of one and comparing. I also built my own passive radiators with refoaming kits and foam board, gluing large steel washers on for weight. 2 10" PRs per box.
