View Full Version : Compilation Album ... Post your track listing ...

We all have varied tastes in music, so I thought it might be a neat idea to post a track listing for a theoretical compilation album of all the music you love and enjoy.

Keep it down to between 12-15 tracks, total playtime no more than say, 1 hr 15 mins.

List the tracks in play order (be sure to make sure the tracks are ordered in such a way that one flows onto to another).

List the:

1) Track Number
2) Song Title
3) Artist/Band
4) Album & Release date

Perhaps some people will go for a "themed" compilation, others will just go for "Greatest Hits". Your choice - let your mind wander ...

Who knows - maybe we can "press" the best compilation and distribute via CD-R (snailmail) to anyone interested?? ;)

2. We Used To Know........from the album "Stand Up" 1969
3. Nothing To Say...........from the album "Benefit" 1970
4. Dr. Bogenbroom...........from the album "Living In The Past" 1972
5. Sea Lion.................from the album "Warchild" 1974
6. Crazed Institution..........from the album "Too Old To Rock, Too Young To Die" 1976
7. Cup Of Wonder..........from the album "Songs From The Wood" 1977
8. One Brown Mouse.........from the album "Heavy Horses" 1978
9. Somethings On The Move.......from the album "Stormwatch" 1979

13. Kissing Willie.......from the album "Rock Island" 1989
14. This Is Not Love.......from the album "Catfish Rising" 1991
15. Lick Your Fingers Clean......previouly unreleased but can be found on the "Aqualung" remaster

Like I said. Not your ordinary mainstream Tull but great music nonetheless. Listed in chronological order of release. I could make alot of these just using Tull. So many great songs.

OK due to the lukewarm response (or is it that people are waiting for the w/e when they have more time?), I will suggest something ...

An old idea, but there are a myriad of different combinations ...

5 Compilations ...

Music of the 1950's

Music of the 1960's

Music of the 1970's

Music of the 1980's

Music of the 1990's

14 Tracks per album ... you want to aim to capture all the themes, strains, and threads in the music world that were around during the decade.

A different person to do each decade ... so who wants to volunteer to pick one, (or shall I allocate?).

Come on gentlemen and gentlelasses ...

Drybasement

2. Sniff 'n' The Tears - Drivers Seat
3. Ram Jam - Black Betty
4. Jay Ferguson - Thunder Island
5. Cliff Richard - Devil Woman
6. The Sanford/Townsend Band - Smoke From a Distant Fire
7. Andy Kim - Rock Me Gently
8. Reunion - Life Is A Rock (But the Radio Rolled Me)
9. Black Oak Arkansas - Jim Dandy
10. The Five Stairsteps - O-O-H Child
11. Steam - Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye
12. Looking Glass - Brandy (You're A Fine Girl)
13. Blues Image - Ride Captain Ride
14. Brewer & Shipley - One Toke Over The Line

Walt

It has no Glam, nor Punk ... we want full representation of every musical influence of the decade.

And since you're the only one who has responded Drybasement, you get to have a go at 1970's.

I will do the 1980's.

Thor, how about you do the 1990's?

Anyone interested in the 1960's? Pete? Tom?

And the oldest fella around here has to do the boppin' 50's. That would be bigmacc if I'm not mistaken. So how about that? You guys up for it?

Aim to post the listing after the weekend (so give it some thought) ...

Ok. Well, I'll have to throw in some 70's metal also. I misunderstood the scope of the project. Man, only 14 songs with a decade of great music to choose from. This may take awhile.

Walt

Yes it's a tall order, that's why I said give it some thought over the weekend.

Yep, metal needs to be there as well ...

Some songs just have to be there - don't worry about putting the anthems in - if they demand to be there, put them in.

THOR

I'll do the 90's, prolly tommorow night ;)

Walt
07-25-2002, 09:30 PM
OK so,

1950's - bigmacc, but he hasn't consented yet ...

1960's - open, any takers?

1970's - Drybasement

1980's - me (Walt)

1990's - Thor

So, anyone want to volunteer for 1960's? Great era, lots of new influences, and some memorable bands ...

I have seven categories of rock music, all important.

Punk
Glam
Prog/Art
Metal
Southern
Rock
Rock (individual artist)

I can only pick two songs for each category.Yikes!!!

Excellent choices!! NOt that the mainstream Tull is bad or too well worn, but there is nothing like the road less travelled.

First let me say that this is an extraordinarily difficult task – there are literally hundreds of songs that demand inclusion, but at the end of the day I found it easiest to identify some musical sub-catagories first, and then identify the songs which were most representative of those categories.

There are sure to be songs which you feel were a must, and have been left out (perhaps you would like to post your alternative compilation of the 1980’s). I identified 100 songs initially, and had to chop it to 14, so you can see it wasn’t easy … anyway,

Strap yourselves in, children of the baby-boomers, get ready for a ride down memory lane:

Guide to Catagories:

New Wave (NW)
Pop (P)
Rock (R)
Synth (S)
Dance (D)
Pop-Metal (M)

Track Listing:

1. Tainted Love - Soft Cell– Non Stop Erotic Cabaret (1981) – NW
2. Town Called Malice – The Jam – The Gift (1982) – NW
3. Money for Nothing – Dire Straits – Money for Nothing (1985) – R
4. Pride – U2 – The Unforgettable Fire (1984) – R
5. Jump – Van Halen – 1984 (1984) - M
6. Patience – Guns N Roses – G N’R Lies (1988) – M
7. Relax – Frankie Goes to Hollywood – Welcome to the Pleasure Dome (1983) – P
8. Love Shack – B52’s – Cosmic Thing (1989) – P
9. 1999 – Prince – 1999 (1984) – P
10. Like a Virgin – Madonna – Like a Virgin (1984) - P
11. Beat it – Michael Jackson – Thriller (1982) – D
12. Opportunities (Lets make lots of Money) – Pet Shop Boys – Please (1986) – S
13. Hungry like a Wolf – Duran Duran – Rio (1982) – S
14. Born in the USA – Bruce Springsteen – single (1984) - R

So there it is.

Note that it doesn’t reflect all my musical tastes, but I tried to keep it as honest to the 1980’s as possible.

Comments?

Walt, the list sounds pretty good, just for fun, here's another 80's list :

To keep it down to 14 songs is TOUGH. Why not keep it up to 74 minutes and whatever fits in that time?
U2 - Sunday, bloody Sunday
Guns n' Roses - Welcome to the Jungle
Depeche Mode - People are people
The Police - Every Breath you Take
Prince - Purple Rain
Van Halen - Jump
West end Girl - Pet Shop Boys
Dire Straits - Money For Nothing
Madonna - Material Girl
Pink Floyd - Learning to Fly
Tears for Fears - Shout
Styx - Mr Robato
Herbie Hancock - Rockit
Girls - Beastie Boys
This music brings me back to high school :D  :smsex:

Well, here's the list. I hope most of you find it pallatable. So many damn songs to choose from and I had a difficult time choosing. The combinations are endless.

One word about punk. I never was much of a fan so my knowledge is limited. You won't find the New York Dolls or the Sex Pistols on this list. I wouldn't know any of thier songs anyway.

1. Young Americans - David Bowie......from the album "Young Americans" 1975 (Glam)
2. Domino - Van Morrison.....from the album "His Band and the Choir" 1971 (Rock Individual)
3. Sultans Of Swing - Dire Straits.....from thier s/t debut 1978 (Rock)
4. Roundabout - Yes.......from the album "Fragile" 1972 (prog/art)
5. Too Hot To Handle - UFO..... from the album "Lights Out" 1977 (Metal)
6. Flirtin' With Disaster - Molly Hatchet.....from the album "Flirtin' With Disaster" 1979 (Southern)
7. Pump It Up - Elvis Costello......from the album "This Years Model" 1978 (Punk)
8. Bang a Gong - T-Rex.....from the album "Electric Warrior" 1971 (Glam)
9. Wild World - Cat Stevens.....from the album "Tea For The Tillerman" 1970 (Rock Individual)
10. Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin....from the album "IV or Zoso" 1971 (Rock)
11. One Of These Days - Pink Floyd.....from the album "Meddle" 1971 (Prog/art)
12. Don't Fear (the reaper) - Blue Oyster Cult....from the album "Agents of Fortune" 1976 (Metal)
13. Can't You See - Marshall Tucker Band.....from the s/t debut 1973 (Southern)
14. Take Me To The River - The Talking Heads......from the album "More Songs About Buildings" 1978 (Punk)

Some will argue on my choices but I feel this is an adequate representation of the music of the 70's. Like Walt said, let's see your list.

Great list Bigmacc. Just to let you know, Gloria was performed by the group The Them. Van Morrison later left them for a solo career. I see you also included a little Motown. That is a must.

Fantastic lists guys ...

As I said it was only when I sat down and tried to draw up the list that I realised what a difficult terms of reference we set ourselves.

Having said that I think we did pretty well. :)

The funny thing I realised when I was doing my list of the 80's was that the music from that decade hasn't aged as well as the music from say, the 60's or 70's. I think it's because they all went off in a different direction after the catharsis of the punk experience and we sure got some different sounds - sounds for that era, which probably haven't aged too well. Too much synthesized music for my liking and not enough guitar.

One catagory I suppose both Drybasement and I omitted (as it straddled the decade) was disco. Well you can't get them all!

Now if Thor will just do the 1990's we will be brought right up to date.

Great work guys ... :)

Ok, my turn..... no particular decade, just music that I feel really shows off ribbons and ESL's-

lot's of detail and separation, with strong mid range (guitar and vocals - male and female) and bass.

2) "On my own" by Al Dimeola (3:21)
3) "Nadia" by Jeff Beck (3:50)
4) "Wichita Lineman" by Johnny A (4:01)
5) "Dance me to the end of Love" by Leonard Cohen (6:10)
6) "Thru these walls" by Phil Collins (5:06)
7) "When we Dance" by Sting (5:59)
8) "The Prophet" by Al Dimeola (1: 18)
9) "Don't Know why" by Norah Jones (3:06)
10) "Give it up" by Sade (3:52)
11) "Mr Levon" by Shawn Colvin (4:08)
12) "Tom's Diner" by Suzanne Vega (2:40)
13) "Little earthquakes" by Tori Amos (6:51)
14) "One Small Year" by Shawn Colvin (4:08)
15) "They Dance Alone" by Sting (7:10)
