Just in time for the 4th, here's a neat DIY concept:

tempting to make, but probably just easier to wait for one of the many smokers that surface at the thrifties. Enjoy!

Cool, I think I'll try to find my old hot plate and just hook it up in the bottom of my old Weber. I love slow cooking with the Weber and it is an art regulating the heat but it's a real drag when it gets away from 'ya and you let it get to hot. Ruined a mesquite smoked prime rib that way. Anyway the controlable electric heat source sounds like a perfect solution.
Thanks,

I'm using a 1,000 watt burner, not sure it will last forever but at 9.99 it's a bahgin! Top temperature is hovering at 215 degrees Fahrenheit. The burner gives up decent heat and smolders the wood nicely. The local thrifty yielded a 2.00 stainless steel pan as a substitute for a cheap pie tin. I damn near lost my mind and paid more than 10 for the thermometer. A domed lid would be a big improvement over my "near flat" inverted base top. 2 racks of baby backs go on at 6:00 tomorrow morning, the rest of the ribs and chicken get dry rub and will be "grilled" mid afternoon.

I'm 6 hours into my first smoke on this thing! Working well, hovering at 205 to 210 F.

Looks great. I was just given a Char grille H2O electric smoker but have never tried anything like that. Maybe this weekend.

I tried the little smoker out saturday, did 2 salmon steaks for the wife (about 2 hours), and a Turkey breast for me (3 hours). Used hickory, came out pretty darn good. Went to the store on Sunday and bout a real themomter with numbers, and some more Hickory, Mesquite, and Black cherry for the next adventure. :thmbsp: :thmbsp:
