For all my UK friends out there (and anyone who has ever spent a little time in the UK), I just purchased the Old Grey Whistle Test videos. For the uninitiated, the show is sort of equivalent to American Bandstand in that it showcased music groups mainly from the UK and US. It is decidedly different in that it provides a non-glitzy performance sans lip-syncing (for the most part). The show was usually filmed in the morning (often presenting a challenge for many artists, especially after a night of debauchery) and showcases many classic rock greats as well as the college/alternative 80s artists/groups. The most important aspect is that almost all of the artists perform for real - live - and always provide an intimate musical experience. Tack on commentaries by such greats as Rick Wakeman, Roger Daltry, Bill Nelson, Nick Lowe, Jools Holland, Roddy Frame and many others and you have a winning combination.

Volume 2 is currently my favourite! With Hall and Oates, The Who, Roxy Music, Aztec Camera and a fun-filled good time provided by the Stanley Clarke/George Duke Project, this volume provides great insight into the musical art form, the politics of the business, and even some equipment behind the musical experience. Too bad they left out many others I wish were onthe videos (Kate Bush for one).

Be forewarned that the New York Dolls and The Who appear to lip sync, but the rest of the acts are decidedly performed live.

I first heard of the Whistle Test via a Benny Hill parody (of Bob Harris). I've since been intrigued by the premise of independent artists having a venue for the art without selling out.

I understand the videos were released in 2004 in PAL (primarily European) and NTSC (North American) formats but figured I share the experience for those who missed out.
