View Full Version : Vandersteen 2 Speakers Not 2C
Duffinator 07-04-2006, 02:26 PM There are a pair locally I'm thinking about. How are these different from the 2C speakers? Do these have rubber or foam surrounds? Anything else I should know about them? I've heard a lot of good things about the 2C's so I'm wondering if they compare well to them.
Thanks
AlleyKat 07-04-2006, 02:51 PM Couldn't get a good look at the serial # in the pic you posted. Often, sellers w/o familiarity ( 3x on eBay in the last few months) with the line will advertise 2C's as Model 2's as they look exactly the same on the outside. The distinguishing feature is the serial #. If it ends in "C" it's a model 2C. I have never heard the 2's, but I love my 2C's. Contact the seller and find out the exact serial #. If they are local, go & listen!
AlleyKat 07-04-2006, 02:53 PM If you want, I have all the original factory material for my 2C's. I can scan it and send it to you. PM me if you want it.

Duff,
What's the serial number on those? If it starts or ends with a "C", those are the 2C's. They look exactly like my 2C's anyway.

Duffinator 07-04-2006, 02:59 PM I have the picture downloaded to my PC and if you blow up the picture you can make out a C at the end. :thmbsp: So your 2C's don't say C after the 2? Are they rubber or foam surrounds? Anything else you can tell what to look for?
Thanks

That is correct, my Vandersteens are the 2C's, but the "C" is part of the serial number. If the ones you're looking at have a "C" in the serial number, they are indeed the 2C's.
The resident expert on the Vandersteen's is "GordonW" and hopefully he'll chime in here on your other questions.
It is my understanding that the foam on the 2C's is the non-deteriorating type. I've never had the "sock" off mine and they sound fine. I had them at the AK Fest this year. One thing they do really well, is the female singing voice.

Duffinator 07-04-2006, 03:19 PM Great thanks. Now if I hear back from the owner I'll go grab them.

I can't really tell from the pictures, but do those have the factory stands attached to them as well? Mine do, and they are nice to have.

RetroIdon't think so and I asked the owner that question. Still waiting.....
Duffinator 07-04-2006, 03:41 PM Do these need shorting straps between the speaker terminals or is there some sort of switch used when bi-amping? I don't see any in the photo of the back.

Yep, you need the strips, otherwise you can do what I do, bi-amp them.

RetroMaybe the seller thinks they don't work properly because of the missing strips. :thmbsp:
AlleyKat 07-04-2006, 03:50 PM My 2C's are bi-wired. When I first got them, an AK member advised me to use jumpers and not bi-wire/amp. I contacted the Vandy factory to obtain jumpers and and they VERY strongly advised bi-wiring or bi-amping!

hawkeye mike 07-04-2006, 05:06 PM Dude, you get those Vandy's up and running and I cannot wait for the A/B against your L810s. Many on here have written that the Vandy's are in a higher league... could not be more fired up for you!

I have heard both and do in fact own a set of 2c's, and IMOP will kick the sound listening pleasure up a notch over the 810's

AUDIOPEASANT 07-04-2006, 11:59 PM The 2C has a Vifa 8" woofer (poly with rubber surrounds) , a peerless mid in a seald can, and an Audax silk dome tweeter. Unless a cat gets hold of them the woofer surrounds won't need replacing. If you do have cats, lock them out of the room. They will shred them. The re-sock job cost $40 apiece plus shipping.

This is also very useful information to have, thank you!

GordonW 07-05-2006, 12:03 PM As Vandersteen was transisitioning woofers between 2B and 2C models, there is a slight possibility that those might have foam surrounds on the woofers (and need to be refoamed). Most of those had rubber surrounds, tho.
Some of th3 2Bs and 2Cs had a foam surround passive radiator... those definitely will need refoaming, if present (the foam always goes out on the passive radiator first). However, later models units had a rubber surround...
Also, after thinking about it a bit... I THINK those have SEAS-built 4" mids. If so, THOSE may also need refoaming. If they're the Peerless units (which he used later) they probably will not need refoaming.
It's worth going into them (remove the bottom wood panel, unstaple the sock, and slide it up the cabinet to where you can shine a flashlight in and see the drivers) to make sure...
Regards,
Gordon.
kfa888 07-05-2006, 12:26 PM I think I am mixing ohm and Vandersteen up, the ohm had the big long coned strange looking down firing woofer right?

AlleyKat 07-05-2006, 12:46 PM I have the original factory brochure for my 2C's. Unfortunately, I can't reduce the scans enough to meet the attachment limits & still be readable. PM me if anyone wants copies.
Duffinator 07-05-2006, 10:48 PM I wish I was telling you how great these speakers sound but I haven't heard back from the seller. I contacted the person very quickly after being posted. Maybe these (http://sacramento.craigslist.org/ele/178218974.html) were just too good to be true. I'll send another email to the seller but I'm not holding my breath.
Thanks for all the information from everyone. I've had my eye on the 2C speakers for some time and have been waiting for a pair to show up that are reasonably priced to give them a try.
AlleyKat 07-05-2006, 11:06 PM For that price, it's either too good to be true or many people responded very, very quickly! Good luck to you & keep trying - it would be a major score (a double Bolly) at that price.
joenielsen 07-06-2006, 09:07 AM $80 would be a great price. I hope you get them!
