I generally buy classical music in garage sales and can find plenty of good stuff for $0.25 - $1 each.

Jazz is however a different story. Its usually cheap enough when I find it but I hardly ever find it.

If I want a decent jazz collection any time soon, I need another route to get it.

Every now and then I see a jazz collection of over 100 jazz LPs or CDs come up for sale.

Assuming I'm buying the whole collection and it contains a general mix of titles in good condition, what is a reasonable amount to pay per CD and how much per LP?

Well, jazz releases usually are pressed in very small batches compared to rock, rap, etc. For instance, a CD rerelease of a classic Blue Note recording from the 50s and 60s engineered by the great Rudy Van Gelder (wonderful sound!) might only total 5,000 copies worldwide. So the supply is limited and many great sessions originally issued on vinyl have yet to be released on CD. Given that, if you can get used CD's with complete booklet and no marks, I'd say $5 a CD is a bargain. That's when you buy one of those batched sets on Ebay. Obviously, individual CDs go for more. Albums depend on the rareness. A mint condition album with a slightly worn album jacket/cover should probbaly cost more than a CD, perhaps about $7-8. Others, please chime in.

That is a loaded question? If I knew I surely would be working on wallstreet. Thanks to a fellow AK who convince me tht CD quality can be enhance by a quality amp and CD player my collection has grown to almost 400 cd's. Mostly jazz. I got them a pre auction buy (store closing inventory) brand new at $1.00 per cd to a yard sale of an excellant jazz collector for $1-2 dollars. What would I sale them for, my jazz lp's and CD's are priceless. SA sell them from 1.99 to 2.99 an I ocassionallly get lucky. Would I pay $20.00 for a missing Coltrane, Miles or Grover Washington from a good record label, definitely yes. Prepare to pay and hope Karma comes your way!

Good condition Jazz LPs from Bluenote, Galaxy, Riverside, Impulse, Milestone, Concord etc. are rare finds in my opinion and will ony become more scarce and valuable. Would I pay 10-15 bucks for some of these classics?...You Betcha!

I have been slowly building up my Jazz collection. Except for a few selections I received from my Secret Santa this year they have all been Thrift finds. I enjoy the infrequent finding of them. It is like a treasure hunt. I have maybe 30 or 40 albums now. Lots of Brubeck, Coltrane, Maynard Fergusen(sp). I just remembered, I have bought a few from the local used shop for maybe 4 bucks each. But those are rare. I have been finding a lot of Fusion Jazz lately, Ronnie Laws and Jeff Lorber. Just keep looking, it's out there.
