Most of y'all know I'm a vintage ss guy. Let it be known I don't have any deep abiding animus toward tube gear. I just don't think the gestalt of the sound reproduction experience is what I get with my solid state gear.
Most especially when, like just now, I get the big stereo playing.
600 watts per side, and 98dB/w/m big speaker systems provides such a rich sound with all the magic dynamics one might possibly want.
That's coming off of a couple hours with the 250 wpc PA5001/C-383/P-530 system. The P-530 are efficient, but are down probably 4dB from the JBL. There is nothing lacking in the sound of the P-530 system-- the music is as pure as a crystal goblet. But the big system just provides such a huge sound, and it's quite good sound.
Comments abound around that AK is a vintage ss site. Nah, just some of it. But, who *wouldn't* appreciate a good vintage system? And, the choices available are so many.
This place is so much like hanging out with friends. Y'all can disagree with friends, but remain friends, and still say, "you're crazy, dude!" then toss 'em another cold brew or whatever, eh?
Gear opinion. I have four working Soundcraftsmen amps, and two of their preamps. Using a pair of PCR800 bridged in the big stereo. Got the PA5001 driving the PL P-530, and the A5002 driving the HPM-900. Gawd, they provide solid sound amplification without any sound artifacts of their own. MOS-FETs, so if anything the sound is like unrestricted/unlimited tube-like sound.
I've played stereo's loud for a long time. Not so much now, but sometimes, y'know, ya gotta do whatcha gotta do. And right now I gotta do it. Hey, I don't have ol' Roxie's ears to worry about anymore, and the cat is still out doing whatever it is tom cats do ...
These big JBL CF-150 provide huge bottom end, huge dynamics, solid to below their rated 30Hz (I've used the Stereophile cd, they're capable of clean output well into the mid-20Hz region, and are still providing some energy below that!) The amount of bass output would be off-putting, but, at least MY pair, the big mid and the titanium dome tweet certainly match the woofers.
Like, I'm listening to Melissa Etheridge (a Kansas girl, for what that's worth  ) and it sounds right oh so right. Except for the smells, I could be sitting in a bar in Lawrence listening to her set, before she broke out into the bigtime. So, yeah, I like chick singers, and not just rockers.
Now I've got Cyndi Lauper on. Her huge range is just how it is.
Needless to say, I like this big stereo.
The band is just precise, articulated, and placed. All this in my smallish, overcrowded say what 18x12-ish living room. You may well imagine that the sound is almost overwhelming right now.
Well, I was just sitting here, reading some of the later posts and all. Mostly been listening to the stereo, seem to be picking some older tunes. Just been cd's and I'm still trying to find my Pink Floyd album cover! Sheesh.
