I recently aqcuired a Marantz 2270. I don't yet have a CD player but I wanted to see how clear it would sound, so I plugged in the L and R cables from my DVD player and connected it to my reciever. Sound only came from the left speaker but it sounded great! My only concern is that after a few minutes the left speaker started to make a scratchy noise that worried me. I'm a newcomer to the wonderful world of professional audio so please bear with my shortcomings. Is it safe for me to connect R/L cables to the reciever whether it was originally intended or not?

I assume your L and R cables from the DVD player are simply standard phono plugs so are identical to those you would use from a CD player. The audio from your DVD player comes out a line level, so that is also the same. No safety problems there!

What you do have, somewhere, is a problem with either the audio output on your DVD player, or the input you connected it to on the Marantz. Have you tried your cassette deck through the same input? Did you get the same scratchy, one-channel presentation? If so, you need to lavish some attention on your Marantz - a good clean-up with DeOxit in the switches (do a search - there are loads of threads about this on AK) and a proper double check of all your connections (principally making sure that your right speaker connections aren't shorting out (positive and negative wires touching). The 2270 is a nice unit and its well worth a little patience and work to get the best out of it.

Anything you are not sure about, always ask on AK first - there are many many highly experienced people on here (most of them more so than me, and I've been into hi-fi for 20 of my 27 years) who are only to pleased to help newcomers to the scene.

PS which input are you using for the DVD audio? Use AUX (auxiliary) and if that one was giving problems try using the tape in connections just to see if its the one input or a general issue with the Marantz. DO NOT PLUG ANYTHING OTHER THAN A TURNTABLE INTO THE INPUT MARKED 'PHONO' (you probably already know this, but best for me to make sure).

I have three 2270's, two of them are plagued by problems like this, I found the problem to be the front dubbing jacks, the contacts were corroded, when the jack is used the signal path is disrupted, when not used, it's supposed to become a closed circuit and the signal path restored, if it has dirty contacts it will sound terrible. You didn't mention if this problem only happened when you "possibly" used the AUX input for the DVD player, does FM and PHONO still work correctly?? A good cleaning of all controls and switches is a good start, the speaker protection relay is also another known issue with this model, another strange problem I ran into was when the original owner re-used the bottom wood case screws when he removed the wood case, the screws are so long that when used without the wood case - they grounded out the dubbing jack on the front panel, good luck, Dave.

I had a similar problem when connecting a SACD-DVD to my amplifier , I got scratch and distortion , went back to my normal CD player and the normal sound came back. I don't know if its your case, but normal range CD players have an output level of 2.2 Vrms at 0 db which is usually lower than the DVD , my old McIntosh amplifier has a switch to regulate input , but what I did was simply change the speakers from 4 ohm to 8ohm and all the scratch was gone , finally an excellent sound quality from the SACD-DVD. I don't see why you are not hearing the right channel, but as already stated check the connectors. Hope it might help.

Ive never had any luck with 70s receivers and computers or dvd players they always do something strange. But cd players seem to work perfectly on them....
