Had some small stain spots on the front of my recently acquired CR-2040. Stubborn, wouldn't budge when hit with denatured alcahol. I had lying on my workbench an "Eberhard Faber Pink Pearl" eraser, the old kind you unwind the paper from as you use it. I tried it on an old Marantz faceplate I had laying around, and it didn't leave any marks or mar the brushed finish. Short story, it works wonders cleaning small, stubborn stains from brushed aluminum. You cannot see where I used it. I even tried it on a small scratch where a knob had contacted the faceplate and left a light scratch. Nearly completely removed the scratch. Work it with the grain and then use alcahol to finish, and stuff disappears! Nice thing about it is the ability to clean very small spots easily. Has anyone else tried this?

acetone might also work provided it's not near any silkscreen.

The eraser was fairly easy on the silk screen on the old Marantz face. Repeated rubbing did wear it off, though, but it took a good bit of rubbing. I'm sure some brands/years would be more or less sensitive to it.
