Damn Gary, sorry to see that. Glad you're okay. Any electronics get damaged?

There were some bad ass thunder storms that came rolling through around 11 PM last night. Lightning everywhere. And lots of wind damaged in some areas. Needless to say, I had everything unplugged including the cable and phones. I'm not taking anymore chances.

Cheers

Feller's I shit you not, I had a 3 element beam get hit about 6 years ago. Now I mean a direct hit. Blew the rotor apart, and destroyed about my whole HAM shack. But I had that some bitch and the other 5 antennas grounded so damn well when it happened the lights in the house didn't even blink. It took out the 2 TV's just from the EMP, the picture tubes were shot. And the phone box on the side of the house was blown off and landed about 20 ft away. It was really fucking scary, because at the time my older sister was on the phone when it happened.

She was mad until she started crying because I explained to her that she should have been dead, and my clinical mind had no explanation for her walking around.

Sense then I've toned down my enthusiasm for the numerous ways humans can kill themselves.

Well...back home from work...so i can give more details!!!!

We were in the living room last nite watching the storm lots of wild lightning!...had a few good ones off in the distance...but all of a sudden ..Blam-oooooooooh!!!!....and the flash was at the same time!...

I thought it hit at the School across the street.....then the youngest boy comes upstairs and says he "felt that one!" Come to find out that he had his wrist on the edge of a Kitchen table we have down there, which has a metal facia on ,playin a game on his computer. he said then his screen on the computer went blank for a few secondsand camo back on. While he is telling us about the 'hit' he took, I noticed the screen on my TV in the living room was all purple. I turned it on and off a few times and everything was hunkey Dorie! and went about our business watching the storm. them the oldest boy ,who was watching TV in his room in the basement sais his TV picture was all messed up too...so I tried turning it on &off a few times but it never cleared up.

A half hour later I came online ,to the chat room, to tell the guys what had happened ...and I had no sound of the posts in the room...so i tried to turn up my HK 695 Speakers i use on my computer with no luck...you can just barley hear a sound when you put a speaker up to your ear. so those are junk now...damn...I liked that little system too...great sound for the small size .

Well I went to bed and thought nothing about anything else being messed up.

The next morning...(this morning) I was out on the back deck, checking the pool temperature, and saw a chunk of tree bark laying there. So I went out front ( thats where I thought the strike was the night before) and looked around...Nothing!. A little while later , when going out to the work truck I noticed a big chunk of a shingle laying beside the truck...I picked it up and looked around at the roofs to see where it might have came from.... Again...nothing.. So as I was looking around more ...I saw a light streak running down my Big ole Pine tree in the back yard ..next to the garage...So i went out to see it closer... and shure enough thats where the lightning hit the nite before. I also noticed more shingles laying around..so i walked to the side of the garage and said to myself...I said "self! you better go inside and check out if anything happened in there ... shure enough...in the back corner there it was ...a gaping hole about 8-10 inches in diameter and chunchs of wood blasted all over the back of my '66 Merc thats stored in there. There is also a 'straw' sized piece of wood stuck into the concrete floor on an angle.

Now I just have to wait for the insurance adjuster to come have a 'look-see'.

I also found out my Replay TV unit internal phone modem doesn't work anymore either...cuz as long as it is hooked up to the phone line...my phones dont work. So I guess that is a casualty also....

now the game begins with the insurance company..... wish me luck!..

Don't worry, lightning does not strike twice on the same area. :)

Not true - a new house East of me was hit twice, here's the situation; new home, full of antiques, lightning strike 1 and it burns to the ground, everything is rebuilt, strike number 2 damages the crap out of it, owner sells and moves on, that was a few years back, so far it's still standing and OK!! :scratch2:

Why did that house not rebuild with lightning protection system?

Also, in severe storms, best to take a few minutes to disconnect everything, including telephone lines, and prevent all the damage.

Too bad about the beautiful tree. Unusual that the top 1/3 would break off like that.
But tree should still survive and be good.
