do you go for the widest soundstage with them far apart or close in, as in next to the tv?
I've got a 51' widescreen.
right now they are on a mantle about 18" behind the plane of front of screen/center channel. I am moving them foward on tall stands. the right side is a corner where the SVS sits, so moving the right front out along the wall is a cannot as the sub is a foot out.
Checked out the Dolby site on the matter. They given no info on how far apart it should be, only that they be equidistant to the seating position. you usually have a speaker distance setting on any HT Rx to compensate.
:dunno:

on the room and the speakers. If the speakers are not shielded then I would put them wide and toe in slightly.
Can you move the sub? Placement of the front speakers is more important then where the sub is. This is because bass is omni-directional (You knew that, didn't you!!). L-C-R need to be as close to the same distance away as possible.

Hmmm...well, I actually had to go downstairs to see just how far apart my speakers were set apart. They are 7' from center to center...and 11' to my ears. This set of speakers and my old set were set aside my big screen. Neither speakers are shielded and there were no problems. Granted...the magnets in my new speakers are alnico mags...but there wasn't a problem with the old ones either (although they were a little ways from the side of the Tv). Best to do is try different positioning.
Trying different positioning is also the best for setting up your speakers for sound also. Do you toe-in...or toe-out? That really depends soo much on your speakers...your room...and what you prefer. What I would try is pointing them straight ahead...then move in small increments in...noteing what gave you the preferred soundstage, imaging and overall sound you liked. Also experiment with moving the speakers out (or in) from the rear wall...an inch can make a difference. There are several sites on-line that help with speaker positioning...and while these are great to read...and to try and incorporate in your room...it is not always possible to do this...as many of us do not have an ideal room designed for audio use only.
let us know what ends up working for you and your system.
Hmmmm they are this far apart (51" TV too):
How did that Sasquatch's toe get in my picture

Well I have a 53" screen and my speakers are about 8 foot apart and maybe 14 inches off the back wall. One speaker is about 20 inches off the side wall and the other speaker is about 3 foot off the other side wall. Both speakers are on stands as shown allowing for a very open sound. My listening posistion should be at the top of the triangle at about 8 foot but sadly that's inpractical. So by treating the room some it helps the early reflections and my further away position.

well I figured by pulling them in a bit, like 16" off the walls, I would improve my imaging from the fronts, due to maybe less reflection off the sides, so they would disperse better, as in a better image.
In my living room, the music setup is a 24' wall, and the speakers are 18' apart(double Advents). When they were in the corners, it was too boomy, but I really like the sould of really left and right. It really spreads the 'soundstage' out.
Stereo is much different than hometheater.
This Dolby site has got me thinkin'.....or maybe I'm just thinking too much:rolleyes:
the RT25i's go on 45" stands, even with the tv, the equipment goes in a small rack were the tree is and the SVS moves out a bit.

Something I would try is to move them closer together. I would get them on stands (away from the rear wall) and give yourself some room with that one side wall...maybe set them up two or three foot away from the side of the Tv (it looks like that would still give you room from the side wall). After this is done I would try them toed almost all the way out...just a little less than facing straight ahead. From there...You can toe them in little by little.

My mains are 7 feet apart and I am about 8 ft from them. They are also toed in a bit. I like the equalateral triangle set up, Sound good with images going over past the speakers left and right.

First off it's a fallacy to expect a wide soundstage by simply moving your speakers further apart. Move too far apart and you get excess side wall reflections plus a hole in the middle. Too close together and everything becomes a giant mono blob of sound.
In your system the best thing to do is to get those speakers out from behind the TV and away from the walls. Anything in front of and between the speakers will act as a giant baffle/diffuser and destroy any hope of a soundstage or good imaging at all.
Set the fronts as you would in a stereo system and turn the center down, that will give you more spaciousness.

Hello Haoleb
"what the heck is the thing above the tv"
Thats a center channel speaker. It's a 15" coax driver. One of these days I want to get a 32" TV to fit under it. Just wondering if I would be too close to a screen that size.

Hello Wildwest
"Pardon the duuuhhh here but ummm who's main speakers are those?"
There is no reason at all you should recognize them. They are my own design that I made about a year or so ago. They were based on the Drew Daniels article on Don's site. I think they sound great but I am biased. Lot's of fun to build!

Robh-
you definately need a bigger TV. 32"? nahhh, gotta go big, big big!!! you are definately a candidate for at least a 51" WS:thmbsp:
Michael -
I have done exactly that, well almost. I turned my center down 3db and moved the fronts out even with the screen/center. Definately an improvement!!! In this case, wider placement was NOT ideal for a HT setup. However, in my music room, as I stated earlier, my speakers are 18' apart and it sounds fansastic. Soundstage is just perfect. You can pick out instrument placement(well almost, I like to think!) in an orchestra and rock music is just absolutely solid. They are 3feet from the side walls and 2 feet from the room opening.
life is good:guitar:
In my case I have my center channel at +3db's one of my pet peeves is being able to hear the dialog above all else and by turning the center up a bit I am able to hear what's being said when other noises are occuring.
