What're the odds that all three of my hi-fi VCRs don't work anymore. Granted I haven't played them in ages, but I wanted to watch a movie the other night and both the JVC & Hitachi would not play. They have never been abused.

They have never been abused.
But what you don't know is, while you were away your DVD players got together and beat them up! :D
(Sorry. I know that didn't help.)

Belts? Hardened capstan pinch rollers? Sensors?

Bought a new one this morning--it doesn't work, either.

Bad AC socket? Weird Bermuda-Triangle for VCR's within your house? :scratch2:

Keep looking at the yard sales. It seems that every sale I go to has at least one VCR. You're bound to eventually find one that works.

It is a mystery to me. They were connected the same way they always were.
Returned the new one. Man, it only weighed about a pound, all plastic. Cheaply built crappola.

Stiction.

When my hard drives won't work, I drop 'em from a height of three feet onto a nice thick rug. Brings 'em back to life about half the time.

Probably wouldn't work with a VCR.

Seriously, it's been my experience that when electro-mechanicals sit around unused for a while, they develop problems.

I guess buying a new one isn't the solution, either.

Did you try a different tape?

What does not work ? Explain what does happen .
It could be the tapes clogging up the heads . If a brand new one didnt work i would try them ou on another tv set where you can see the wiring real good .

Quite a few VCRs have a switch for use on channel 3 or 4. Have you checked to see if they have said switch and if they do is it on channel 3?

to check out the subwoofer, i'll need to get the JBL L100 down atop the HPM-900, then hoist the HPM-900 off of the subwoofer. that's about 110 lbs of speakers to haul around. This is the no name CAS subwoofer. The Dahlquist subwoofer on the other side developed an amp problem. So, I've got these two big 15-inch subwoofers not working. The CAS may be turned off or unplugged. I'll wait til tomorrow/today it IS late tp hoist things around.
I'm pretty darn sure I haven't had to switch the tv to video to run vcr movies. I am pretty sure. makes me think the JVC is good, too. These were TOTL video players, hifi stereo etc. heavy well made.
Heck, the other day I bought a NEW vcr hifi player and it didn't work either. Just like the other three. this is getting hard to type, i'm pretty well suckered by pain pills and a few brewskis. i also cannot believe i'm up so late, glad tomorrow/today is a personal holiday and i don't have to work thursday.

BTW, the new vcr hifi vhs machine i bought was a magnavox from target. $69, and weighed about two pounds of plastic. sheesh. returned it the same day.

My Sony Beta HIFI from 1984 just won't quit, has no chip to prevent copying and is a great tape deck for audio since Beta uses the entire width of tape for sound not just two tracks on the bottom. I saw three identical to mine sell for $200 US recently on Ebay so I think it's time to send it on to a new owner. I hate to part with it but since it outlasted four VHS machines I've had there is no doubt it was the better machine and format. One more example of what marketing and cheap imitations can accomplish

Moving around 110 lb. speakers must do wonders for your back side. CC

VHS hi-fi VCRs also use the full width of the tape for audio. I got the impression you were inferring they don't. But I probably just misunderstood.
