Saw a pair of Marantz ____880 (forgot the letters) in a pawnshop for $125 a pair. Drivers look good but the cabinets are scratched and the grills are in poor shape.
Also, a pair of Polk speakers. All it said on the cabinets were "Polk". They're in pretty good shape. Small but heavy for their size. 2-way with probably about a 5" driver. $49.00 the pair? I've always wanted a pair of Polks even though I don't need them at this time....
I used to have a pair of Marantz Imperial 7's. I loved them but hated the grills (which I never had on). Blew up a woofer and sold them years ago.
Any comments on the Polks or Marantz?

I have a pair of Marantz HD-880's and they are a fantastic speaker! If the cabs can be refinished and the drivers are clean.....go get 'em!

The little Polks sound like either the 5jr or 4s. Nice but the Marantz would be nicer! Polk 10s would be even more nicer!

are great speakers and IMHO are nicer than the monitor 10. I have both here and have also had the monitor 11 and RTA 12. The 880 are my pick of them all. The foam may need repalcing on the woofers, mine did but it went pretty smoothly.

If the Polks are Monitor 4's, I would pass them by. I had a set and thought their sound was poor.

Thanks, AK members, for the feedback on the Marantz and Polks.
Concerning the Marantz 880's, I have a pair of JBL 4311's which I love. Will the 880's sound better? I'll only buy them in that case (but, damn, I want them like a kid before Christmas!). I eyeballed the surrounds and all looks perfect.
The Polks have no markings except 'Polk' on the cabs. To rationalize, I would only use them for casual listening, so my Bose 201's will be good enough (bought them for $20 at a yardsale, so there).
