Looking at the Poll, AK is not an accurate reflection of Market share. That is very interesting... :scratch2:

If any one votes DOS, it's time to get out the polygraph.

I used Dos growing up. My first actual PC other than the apple II was a 286. A whopping 10mhz, 20mb HD, and 2mb ram. Had dos 5 with windows 2.0. Later upgraded to a 386 DX-40 with 8mb rab and an 80mb HD with Dos 6.22 and win 3.1.

I've worked with Gentoo, Debian 3, and Redhat 7-9 with both desktop and small server installations. I use a gentoo linux server as a backup server to store music, and other data.

I've used windows 2.0 through xp. I'm fluent in all. got pretty aquainted with dos for a few years. Supported mac os 7-9 for a year as well. have an os-x computer in the house here too.

Have also tried BeOS and OS2. I can see why they didn't last long...

Haven't fooled around with other flavors of unix yet or Novell, but from what I hear Novell isn't all that great to play with.

I use Windows ME and have no plans to upgrade yet. It works fine for me.

I have used Win XP for while now, very satisfied. I upgraded from Win98 which had a few bugs. At the office (Engineering design and product support) our IS dept is moving people from Win2000 to XP, all Win98 has now gone.
Cheers,
Roger

I put DOS down as I used Windows For Workgroups v3.11 to get to the audiokarma.org webpage using Internet Explorer v3.0 or Netscape Navigator v3.01 Gold.

It goes without saying that it didn't load very well.

You may check and correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Windows is a program not an operating system and it uses DOS for the operating system.
Linux will be on my next PC

Windows is a GUI for the system. Just like Mac OS is now a GUI for Unix.

Yes and no. windows 95 and 98 were a 32 bit os with a 16 bit subsystem (Dos) So windows was in fact a program utilizing a gui that operated over top of dos. windows 3.1 was a 16 bit system running over dos.

Windows NT, 2000, XP, 2003 server, etc. Are all pure 32bit operating systems with no need to run dos underneath. They have their own kernel and hardware layer that doesn't require command.com, config.sys, autoexec.bat, win.ini, or system.ini to function. its only for backwards compatability with legacy 16 bit programs.

Thats news to me,
Its my understanding that Linux is the GUI for Unix.Linux has its own distinct kernel. It is "UNIX-like" without being UNIX. The typical UI for Linux releases is from the FSF's GNU (Gnu's Not UNIX) project.

Mac OS X is a proprietary OS based on BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution) UNIX.

Solaris is a proprietary OS based on a SVR4 UNIX core.

Windows (until NT/XP) is a wrapper around a DOS (originally QDOS - Quick and Dirty Operating System) core, which is a big part of the problem with Windows, IMHO. It's like serving donuts for dinner - you can cover the donuts with all sorts of sauces, condiments, and spices - but underneath, it's still a donut. XP and later releases (assuming Vista will ever show up) are based on NT technology, not on DOS.

Ahhh so now we know why XP doesn't work very well. NT was never a stable platform but I find XP Pro far better than XP home. I had to install a 400 W power supply before it would stop restarting itself if you ran large graphic files, it's better now but you have to do the tweaks so it doesn't control everything and helps speed things up. The flash chat room on AK tends to slow it down and hang in 20 - 30 minutes, I've contributed to Bill long enough so I will learn to use Linux (hopefully on an Apple)

If you're going to run an Apple why not mac os?

I had to install a 400 W power supply before it would stop restarting itself if you ran large graphic files,

You wouldnt get away from that requirement running an Apple. The power
supplies used in the G5 start at 450w and go as high as 600w.
