Hey I hope this vinyl thing catches on.
I know it's not considered "audiophile approved", but I don't care.:p: Last week I got a three-speed Technics SL1200 from KAB with all the goodies. I mounted a new Shure V15xMR on it.
Last night the horns really opened up!:D It put me in a funky mood. After going thru almost my entire colletion of Ohio Players and the kids laughing at my "funky chicken" I started playing anything with reeds.
I never new mono could sound so good, and 78s come alive!
Hmm.......I wonder if I have enough hair to grow my 'fro again:dunno:

What did you end up paying? I've wanted a Tech 12 for a long time (two is better :) )
One of my co-workers has Stanton STR8-80s, but according to him, the SL1200 is the one to have.

It's a bit on the pricey side, but when you only have room for one turntable to do three speeds IMHO this is the one to have.
I still don't have it dailed in completely, but it can only get better. Right now Grover Washington Jr. is Live at the Bijou.

BTW this is a great site.
Good job.:D

I just scored a Technics SL-1300! Super price, like nobody really bid on it. Description and pix show a very fine table.
Not only the Technics, but I also got an Optonica table. Sometimes technology can go overboard: I had used esnipe for both, little expecting to get the Optonica for the opening bid! Optonica, if you remember, made some very nice gear for a few years, and was the higher-end brand of Sharp.
The Optonica's dustcover is made of glass! I'm just hoping one of 'em makes it to me in primo condition!
Why I 'wanted' another TT, I dunno. I have three, led by the DP-47F I've had for about ever.

Bully, have you got the 1300 yet? I think it's pretty much the same as mine with the addition of auto-stop. I have heard of problems with the lift mechanism on the 1300s. I hope yours is OK, I understand that is a costly fix.
I've heard that Denon is really nice. I think it is a better looking unit than the Technics. I like all that wood. I considered it, but I wanted that 78 speed.
Put a nice cart on the 1300 and take it for a spin around your collection. I'm still doing it and it's begining to really sing!

Congrats Steamshooter! that is a nice TT and so well built it will probably last for ever.
How about some pics? Like to see the SL1300 too, Pete?
BTW, I met a dealer/hobbyist who scored a DP47 for something like $50. I tried to convince him he should keep it for himself and start playing some records again but would he listen??:(
Oh well, more for the rest of us.:p:

Mono is King. Especially in older vinyl. I will take a mono Roger Miller any day to the stereo version. I usually stay away from anything that says enhanced stereo effect, or electronically produced stereo. Seems like for a few years that if you put stereo effect on an album people would think that it was better, or the newest thing.....Hmmmmmm....sounds like a certain digital medium that I won't mention.
I spin an AR-XA TT that has 33-45 speeds, manually switching belt for speed, and no 78 speed. I think I will probably find a nice Dual and use it as a 78 only TT. That way it is easier to optomize the stylus, makes it a bit easier on the laquer. I love old timey music and there is a ton of it on 78's, and they are everywhere.

It'll be next week before the 1300 gets here. It is a fully-automatic table.
The DP-47F is a superb table. I am able to track the Telarc 1812 LP at extremely loud levels. The 47F is running through the big stereo. Two Soundcraftsmen PCR800s strapped to mono for 600+ watts RMS per side, controlled by a Soundcraftsmen DX4200 pre/EQ, and the big JBL CF-150's pumping air.
Last year I spotted a clean-looking Technics SL-23 at a thrift, all it looked to need was a belt, so I bought it, and got a belt from Technics/Panasonic. Last weekend I put a NOS Pickering (thanks Dave!) cartridge on it, and it just sings.
I have been under the impression the the Technics 11xx-17xx were essentially the same, with varying degrees of automation, and perhaps with or without strobes, etc.
