Need a bit of advice on repairing rear passive woofer cone which seems to be torn 1" but not all the way thru. Since I just got these speakers I don't know how good it's supposed to sound but they do sound great at lower levels. Haven't tried to push 'em yet for fear of causing more damage and cause tear to get worse. Should I use glue(what type) or a thin piece of tape? Please advise, I don't think parts are available? :tears:

Update: Found some good info on another AK thread and bought and applied some Aleen's Tacky glue seems to working fine and will know more in 48 hours when I can turn the volume up on these guys. My Technics SA 700 seems to drive them with ease with the volume control barely above the .3 Watt area, WOW! Clarity exceeds my L Advents with my old Fisher I used in the 70's if memory serves(often doesn't these days) but doesn't sound as warm. Looks as if tubes are in my future again...any suggestions in the low to (gulp!) medium price ranges? Good size 18X28 room thick carpet and drapes, Dual ULM60E, slow jazz, piano and guitar, Chicago, Matsui etc. Suggestions appreciated for 2 channel sound. Thank you. Bean

Thanks PM! Guess I'll let her rip(he he! PUN!) tomorrow. You've got quite an equipment list, wish I'd held on to those Advents and Dual with that Shure. Nam got in the way and I gave those away to a basically unappreciative relative before I left for the tour. 155MM blew out my left ear drum 2 months before I was supposed to leave. Needless to say there went the "stereo effect" and my audio was done. Recent micro surgery got my hearing back 85% so here I am trying resurrect what I enjoyed almost 40 years ago. Hope these Fortes work out. Bean

Wow! Congratulations on the successful surgery!
Damn 155s. Glad you were on the outgoing end.
Fun thing is, now we can piece back together all that great gear from the '70s at throw-away prices (relatively)!

Beanstocks - the Fortes are great speakers. Congrats on the repair job. They are obviously very efficient and will do alot with minimum output from any amp/receiver. Save your ears, you've got alot of listening and enjoyment ahead of you!

Thanks all. Wish I could display photos, maybe when I figure that dang digital thing my daughter got me for Xmas last. I feel like I'm just starting out piecing my systems together with a whole bunch of components to choose from. Need to put the Technics receiver downstairs and get these Fortes upstairs into my bedroom... you know how it is! By the way, I bumped the volume to test my repair and that Aleen's Tacky held up perfectly. Need a warm sounding amp/receiver/premee I guess...Any suggestions?

For vintage, marantz are consider warm if i remember right. I love my pioneer 980 with sf-1s, not sure how they would pair with fortes. I would think nicely, but it's all personal preference.

Audioguy, believe you are correct and was actually looking for a Marantz 2270 when I stumbled across this Technics SA700 in mint condition. That shiny faceplate did me in and I forked over the money in a deal that I could not refuse. From the Audio Review site I see some recs on Jolida, SET 300B, and other amps and terms I know nothing about. Think I'll probably end up with an old Fisher like I had or maybe a Scott. I'm having great difficulty typing this... ...darn Mottola band bass faintly rattling those curtains, guitar strings where you can touch 'em, woodwind guy blowing off to my right can almost hear his spit rattling the edges of his mouthpiece! Tell you these Forte IIs surprise me every day! Looking for a CD set up but I know that's a whole new ballgame together with home theater and surround sound. :music:

For cd, some people believe in paying a lot and others, not so much. I never thought i would but i wanted better sound and i payed for it, the rotel rcd-1072. It's a fine piece and was review very well by absolute sound. It's a little overkill now, but i still hear the difference and whenever i upgrade to better speakers and maybe tubes it will shine even more. If you want 2 channel sound don't use a dvd player if you're critical.

If .3 watts is sufficent I would seriously consider the Alamaro A205A MkII. It uses EL84 tubes in single ended pentode mode and puts out 5 watts per channel. Used as an integrated amp you can hook up two sources. You can also use it with a preamp for more sources. I use an EL84 amp with my Klipsch Heresy speakers and it sounds great (best amp I have ever used with the Heresies) whether I am cranking Zepellin or mellowing out to Diana Krall.

Idatlof, Looks like you're truly covered wherever you are with custom systems that look impressive. Hope to be there at that level but I have time on my side being semi retired. Funny, I had a Fisher 400 built into a semi custom console in the early 60's tethered with built in Jensens, Dual turntable, Tandberg reel to reel. Those sounds were so clean and pure I can still hear them. I believe the systems you have render in that classic direction. I'll look into that Alamaro though at 5 watts I wonder if it has that headroom for my Fortes should I decide to push them? Rated at 98 or 99 db efficiency maybe. Thanks for your recommendations and yours too audioguy. Turntable, reel to real. and a good CD system are my goals. Thanks. :music:

See if you can borrow a HK 330/430/730/930 receiver from someone.
