Except they still get some aspects wrong.
The diffuse, all enveloping rear surround effect was fine for monophonic rear channel sources where the sound could easily collapse into teh rear speakers but sucks for modern digital sources with discrete rear channels.
One of the reasons for going to discrete rears in the first place was to avoid a diffuse, murky rear soundfield and to go with a direct radiation pattern that is capable of producing a more realistic sense of envelopment and a more coherent total soundfield.
In fact the ITU clockface speaker setup mentioned for multi-channel music listening also works very well for movies, if you have a large enough room.

Unfortunately there ain't no way I am gonna get my 3 front speakers at the same height, heres a picture to illustrate my problem, not just are they too heavy to hoist that high (50 - 70lbs not sure exactly but they fall into that spectrum) they would look horrible sitting 2 1/2' in the air.
