Just won this pair of Cornwalls on ebay:

Original owner says no emblems were on the grills when purchased, but I'm not sure if that's accurate. Would a 1974 model have the standard 3" wide brass logos above the tweeter? Or the V-shaped ones in the upper left corner?

Also, this year would have the standard tweeter/sqauwker config, right? Not the vertical horns? Please enlighten me on when Cornwalls changed over to their current driver arrangement.

Thanks!

Sam

They have always had some emblem...I am not sure if they would still have the "pie slice" or the copper colored (with stripes) Klipsch name spelled out...The other configuration you speake of was called Cornwall II...there is the original Cornwall that it appears you have, the original Cornwall II (which is sometimes called a vertical Cornwall for use as a center channel in stereo music and coveted for use in HT) and the "new" Cornwall II that came out in 1985 I think (or so...now Klipsch is making the Cornwall III...check out www.klipschforum.com everything you EVER wanted to know about Klipsch. It appears as if you have a beautiful pair of Klipsch Cornwalls in Walnut Oil (C-WO)...

Hi Bill,

Ahh... didn't realize there was an 'original' Cornwall II (vertical). I knew about the 1985-1990 II models.

I posted over on the Klipsch forum as well. Can't wait to get these, they look great!

1974 has the Klipsch "pie wedge". Trust me on this one :-)

Cool, thanks!

I'm going to order replacements from Klipsch. Would you mind taking a pic of yours so I can figure out where to put in on the grill? We can do it via PM/email if you'd like. I really appreciate it.

You already saw the innards of 74's in another thread.

I did? I've read so many Klipsch threads over the past couple of weeks they're all running together. If you remember which one it was, could you post a link?

oops, maybe not :-) At any rate, it's:

But, since it's just a cut 'n' paste from Photobucket... heck, I'll paste it again...

What improvements in the sound did you notice?

It may help the ringing in the upper mids a bit (or it may have been the audio placebo effect). Listen to "Ghost in This House" on the live Alison Krauss & Union Station album and her voice gets a little piercing on the Cornies... a little less so with the horns damped. It's an inexpensive and readily reversible mod; well worth trying.

The other "mod" well worth trying on your Cornies (as long as you're inside) is to make sure all the screws holding the drivers (and the XO) are nice and snug. They DO work loose over the years (since they're just self-tapping screws sunk into plywood) and the consequences are audible (in a bad way).

Unfortunately, an even better mod is driving them with a Marantz 8B, as it turns out. This is also readily reversible, but it ain't inexpensive!

Mark, I'll definitely take a look inside next weekend when I pick them up, and report back :D
