Read the ad at the bottom.
I've seen amps in that state described as nearly mint on ebay, too.
Funny how the lights still worked...

I think I found that fire-damaged amp at the Goodwill. Here is mine...

I would like to say thanks also. This thread put me in touch with a friend that I haven't seen in 10 years.
Nice Karma. :thmbsp:

I wonder how many people out of ten could casually replace the line cord on this receiver (unless they did a simple splice job maybe?)

I believe the ad to an extent, I own a 2270(the model ACTUALLY mentioned in the ad), and it is just beasty in build quality. I think it could easily withstand some serious punishment.
Probably fell more like a few feet, but it is a tough little sucker. Mine survived a SEVERE UPS beating. All corners bents in, knobs bent, tranny mount bent, but she still cranked up.
Oh, anyone who would bother rescueing burned up equipment would know how to replace line cord..hehe

I remember the ad as well. When I first saw the ad I thought it was cute but so what? It reminded me of the Timex commercials, where they would strap a Timex watch to something like a barrel and push the barrel over Niagra falls. The end of the commercial would have John Cameron Swayze showing the watch still working. I owned two Timex watches and they both broke after 6 months.

I mostly remember the one where the watch had been inside a tire going down the road for 6 months. Did'nt look too bad on the commercial.

Sorry about the timex's, but, the 2270 blew me away enough, and, my friends who are helping to drive the prices up by buying them, to have that ad printed on a tee shirt with Yes I Am A Marantz Freak!! on the back

I thought it was odd his headphones, tape deck, and whatever turntable speakers are didn't get burnt/buried/etc.
How did he have ANYTHING, if his stuff was being put into a truck by a loader?
I still love my Marantz stuff, anyway.

Anyone know what eventually happened to THAT EXACT receiver? Assuming the whole story and picture are true/real, and not some advertiser's invention, that particular receiver is perhaps the most "famous" single Marantz receiver on the planet. It would make a very interesting addition to a collection, complete with all the fire damage shown in the pic (although I'd bet anything that the owner would have had it fixed back up... or maybe Marantz gave him a replacement, in return for this one to use for promotion?). Anyway, it would be interesting to learn what happened to that particular one.
I had a friend who had a chair in their apartment with a blanket thrown over the back to cover it. When you took the cover off, it had a huge hole blown through it, with springs bent backwards, etc... It had been used in a television ad, similar to the "Get blown away" poster. Made a great conversation piece, since most people (here in Hong Kong, at least) knew the ad well. I'd put that burned-up Marantz in the same category.

If I remember correctly, Marantz gave the guy a new receiver and then used his 2270 in the ad.
The Timex ad I remember best was the one where the watch was tied to the propeller of a boat, dipped in the water and then run for a few seconds. It was live TV and once the watch vanished. (Am I REALLY that old?) Seems like I remember it was during the show called "What's my Line" or maybe "I've Got a Secret".

What I really like about the ad is that Marantz is trying to emphasize the build quality and reliability of their product. Unlike todays ads, which try to emphasize phony power ratings and magic whiz-bang digital sound processing.
